UNLOCKING MALAWI'S MINING POTENTIAL

Dr. Joshua Chisambi, Head of the Mining Department at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), delivered a compelling lecture to Student Officers at the Malawi Defence Force Command and Staff College (MDFCSC). As a former Board Chairperson of the country's Mining and Mineral Regulatory Authority, Dr. Chisambi emphasized the mining sector's potential to drive national development.

He highlighted the importance of curbing illegal mining to unlock the sector's full potential, citing valuable mineral resources like rare earth elements, uranium, heavy mineral sands, graphite, coal and gemstones. Dr. Chisambi praised the government's efforts to attract investments and diversify the economy beyond agriculture.

Previously, Malawi's uranium production contributed 1% to global production and the country aims to increase its mining sector contribution to GDP from less than 1% to 10% by 2030. With strategic partnerships and investments, Malawi can become a significant player in the global mining industry.
