James Kazembe Donates ‘Amtchona for Health’ Books to National Library Service

Malawian cartoonist and creator of the popular ‘Amtchona’ cartoon, James Kazembe, has donated 50 copies of his book, ‘Amtchona for Health’, to the National Library Service (NLS).

Kazembe, whose ‘Amtchona’ cartoons were featured in The Nation newspapers for more than 15 years, visited the National Library Service today to make the donation. He had previously donated about 20 copies of the same book to NLS.

‘Amtchona for Health’ uses cartoons to communicate important health information about the hazards associated with to***co smoking. The book aims to make complex health messages simple, engaging and easy for readers to understand.

Speaking during the handover, Kazembe said he wanted to use his creativity to share a productive message with communities and help educate people about the long-term and permanent negative effects associated with to***co smoking.

National Librarian Amoni Gray Kapasule thanked Kazembe for the donation, saying the books would benefit readers across the country.

“This donation will go a long way for our readers across the country, and we are sure the message will go a long way in changing Malawians.”

Kapasule also encouraged Malawian authors to donate their books to the National Library Service, noting the need to strengthen the collection of locally produced books so that Malawians can have greater access to books written and produced by fellow Malawians.

‘Amtchona for Health’ is available in both English and Chichewa.
