The Embassy of Ireland is delighted to welcome to Malawi the Working Party on Development Cooperation and International Partnerships, hosted by Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Honourable Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr George Chaponda formally welcomed the group to Malawi this morning, together with H.E. Kate Brady, Ambassador of Ireland, and H.E. Daniel Aristi Gaztelumendi, Ambassador of the EU.

Today the delegation had a series of engagements in Lilongwe with representatives from government, UN, civil society, and the private sector. It set the scene for the rest of the week, where they will travel to the field and see how Team Europe is working in Malawi.

Last Friday, we were absolutely delighted to welcome our two new “Diplomats for the Day” to the Embassy of Ireland - Dalitso Mkoka and Fortune Chimphamba! These two students from Chambu Primary School in Area 25 won a competition to write about a woman that inspires them for .

We launched this competition on , which celebrates important women in Irish history. St Brigid, a symbol of compassion, creativity and wisdom, exemplifies the values that drive us to support education worldwide. It is fitting that St Brigid is a patron saint of learning.

Our impressive young diplomats toured the embassy, held a meeting with Ambassador Brady, visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and then helped us organise a reception to mark the occasion. At this reception, they read their fantastic winning entries.

We were also honoured to be joined by three of Malawi’s most promising young football players: Victoria Mkwala, Talandira Chinyamvula and Mary Mawindo. A big thank you to Ascent Soccer for facilitating their attendance!

Victoria Mkwala, who is the Malawi Scorchers' youngest ever senior international player, rallied us all with her story. Truly a woman that inspires!

Ireland was delighted to co-chair the Development Cooperation Group meeting last week alongside Secretary to the Treasury Dr Cliff Kenneth Chiunda.

In her opening remarks, Ireland's Head of Cooperation Sarah McCan noted the importance of structured and strategic development cooperation dialogues and the timeliness of the upcoming budget presentation.

She highlighted the critical importance of:
✔ restoring macroeconomic stability for the wellbeing for the people of Malawi;
✔ ensuring transparency and accountability in the decentralisation process; and
✔ renewed Government-Development Partner dialogues.

Ambassador Kate Brady was in Dedza on Tuesday to observe the National Birth Registration Campaign which Ireland supports through the UNDP Inclusive Digital Transformation for Malawi (IDT4M) project.

The birth registration initiative has been a welcome development, reflected in high turnout from parents at the registration centres.

✋ Embassy of Ireland in Malawi says NO to gender-based violence!

As the draws to a close, colleagues from the Embassy were proud to join our partners MICGBV in a solidarity march through Lilongwe yesterday to raise awareness about gender-based violence, online and offline.

🥔We joined our partner IInternational Potato Centerfor a monitoring visit under the Market-led Transformation of the Root and Tuber Crops Subsector in Malawi, meeting smallholder farmers, cooperatives, processors and anchor farms.

🍠The project supports the commercialization of crops like cassava and sweet potato, increasing their contribution to food and nutrition security, incomes, job creation and economic growth.
