The Cannabis Regulatory Authority (CRA) is participating in the 22nd National Agriculture Fair at the Chichiri Trade Fair Grounds in Blantyre.

The Fair was officially opened by the Guest of Honour, Hon. Roza Fatch Mbilizi, MP, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, who emphasised the importance of innovation, value addition, private sector participation and the involvement of women and youth in transforming Malawi’s agriculture sector.

In line with the Fair’s theme, CRA is showcasing public services it provides in regulating and promoting the cannabis industry, including the issuance of licences, provision of extension services, facilitating market linkages, enforcement and compliance services, among others.

CRA is accompanied by some of its licensees, including Nexgen Medical Limited, which operates in Mulanje and Blantyre and Kamphulu Cooperative from Kasungu.

CRA is also showcasing the broad categories of decriminalised medicinal cannabis (THC) and industrial h**p (C*D), together with locally processed semi-finished and finished products. The exhibition highlights the potential of innovation, value addition and market linkages in supporting the growth and development of Malawi’s cannabis industry.

CRA Engagement with Cannabis Licence Holders

On Friday, 21 August 2026, the Cannabis Regulatory Authority (CRA) engaged cannabis licence holders at BICC, Lilongwe, to discuss the state of the cannabis industry in Malawi, the trajectory for growth, challenges that industrial players are facing and a pathway into the bold future of Malawi’s cannabis industry.

The engagement provided an important platform for dialogue, collaboration and practical solutions towards a more compliant, sustainable and value-driven cannabis industry in Malawi.

In his remarks, the Director General, Mr Chris Chaima Banda, emphasized continuous compliance, the need for high quality and affordable seed multiplication, and the importance of networking among all industrial players which is a foundation for knowledge and good practice sharing to grow a strong industry.

He also highlighted CRA’s vision of positioning Malawi’s cannabis industry for the global market, diversifying the economy and improving rural livelihoods.

Key take aways of the engagement were:

✅ Get licensed before undertaking regulated activities.
✅ Know what your licence permits to avoid falling on the wrong side of the law.
✅ Treat compliance as continuous.
✅ Build quality and traceability across the value chain.
✅ Design for international standards from the start.
✅ Focus on processing and value addition—not only cultivation and distribution.

Today, CRA staff took LUANAR students who are on attachment to Invegrow for a practical learning experience in Malawi’s cannabis industry.

The students toured the different stages of production, starting with the fertigation stage and greenhouses, where they observed mother plants and clones. They then proceeded to the open fields, where they appreciated recently transplanted plants as well as plants that are nearly ready for harvest.

It was a valuable opportunity for the students to connect classroom knowledge with practical experience and gain a deeper understanding of cannabis production in Malawi.

As part of efforts to strengthen compliance and partnerships in Malawi’s cannabis value chain, today the Director General of the Cannabis Regulatory Authority (CRA), Mr Chris Chaima Banda, together with members of the Management Team, toured CBG Limited in Area 43, Lilongwe.

The tour provided an opportunity to appreciate CBG Limited’s contribution to Malawi’s emerging cannabis value chain and to share the Director General’s vision for the sector.

CBG Limited is one of the off-takers supporting smallholder farmers and is engaged in the extraction of active pharmaceutical ingredients from THC cannabis for pharmaceutical applications.

During the tour, the Director General emphasised the importance of operating within the law and maintaining proper documentation and approvals from the Cannabis Regulatory Authority. He further stressed that compliance is not optional and that operators who fail to meet regulatory requirements will face appropriate enforcement action in accordance with the law.

The exercise aims to collect reliable industry data to support evidence-based decision-making, effective regulation and sustainable growth of Malawi’s cannabis sector.

On 6th August 2026, the Director General, Mr. Chris Chaima Banda, toured Kamphulu Cooperative in Kasungu and Tilitonse Cooperative in Nambuma as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the cooperative movement in the Cannabis Industry.

The visit aimed to appreciate the progress made by the cooperatives, engage with members on their successes and challenges, and provide guidance on improving productivity, governance, and sustainability. The tour also reaffirmed CRA's commitment to supporting the growth of cooperatives and strengthening their role as key drivers of economic empowerment and community development.
