BEHIND THE SCENES

Energising a transformer is a big milestone... but for the Ministry, it is not the end of the story

Once power reaches an area under MAREP, our team goes back to find out: how many customers have actually connected to that line?

This is not just a check-up — it is how we measure real impact. Are public facilities and homes really connected? Is rural Malawi truly getting powered?

The picture below shows our team in Fort Maguire in Mangochi tracking connections to ensure that energised lines turns to energised homes, schools and hospitals

Because for the Ministry of Energy, switching on the power is just step one — making sure it reaches YOU is the real goal.

Tell us has MAREP reached your home village yet? If yes, are homes, businesses and public facilities connected?

03/06/2026

More than 170,000 people from rural communities have benefited from solar energy products and improved cook stoves through Demand-Side Subsidies (DSS) project under GIZ Energizing Development Program (ENDEV). The project was implemented across Nkhata Bay, Balaka, Salima, Dedza, Mzimba, Dowa and Kasungu it demonstrated how targeted subsidies can help vulnerable households overcome affordability barriers and gain access to modern energy solutions.

Speaking during a closing event of the project at Lilongwe Sunbird Capital Hotel today, the Minister of Energy Hon. Dr Jean Mathanga, MP described the close out event as “a transition point rather than an ending. The lessons, partnerships and achievements we are celebrating today provide a strong foundation upon which future interventions can be built.”

In her remarks, Her Excellency Ute König, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Republic of Malawi, stated that “the demand-side subsidies have helped to further address affordability barriers for vulnerable households while strengthening market participation by private sector companies.”

DSS was a 4-year program implemented by GIZ through EnDEV, in partnership with Ministry of Energy, Self Help Africa and CUMO Microfinance Limited (CUMO) with a total funding of EUR 4.8million from Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The project worked with 24 Malawian companies through Result Based Financing to distribute solar home systems and improved cook stoves.
