Artisanal Miners Embrace Cooperative Formation

The Department of Mining has intensified the formalization of artisanal and small-scale miners through the formation of mining cooperatives across the country.

This week, the cooperative formation and training exercise which is being done in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade has commenced in Dwangwa in Nkhotakota, Kamchocho in Mzimba, and Chimbiya in Kasungu.

Speaking during the exercise at Kamchocho in Mzimba District, artisanal miner Mr. Blessings Ameda welcomed the initiative, saying it will help miners transition from illegal operations to organized and lawful mining activities.

Representing T/A Chiputula, Chief Hlane expressed gratitude for the formalization exercise, saying it will help local miners benefit more from their mining activities.

Speaking at Kamchocho in Mzimba, Mining Surveyor Hillary Bandawe emphasized that the formalization of mining entities is a positive development and a key requirement before licensing.

The Department of Mining says the exercise will continue next week in Makanjira in Mangochi, Mtaja in Machinga, and Matapila in Lilongwe.

The cooperative formation and training exercise is being funded by the Malawi Mining Investment Company (MAMICO).
