S4P PROGRAMME TO BOOST PSYCHOSOCIAL WELLBEING AMONG DZALEKA YOUTHS, SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES

Dowa District Council Director of Economic Planning and Development, Phillimon Maseko, has said the Sports for Protection (S4P) programme will promote psychosocial healing, child protection and peaceful coexistence among refugees at Dzaleka Refugee Camp and surrounding host communities.

The S4P has been designed to use sports as a transformative and protective tool and it is targeting children, adolescents and young people (CAYs) aged 10 to 24.

It is being implemented by Dowa District Council through the District Sports Office with technical support from UNHCR, which on the project, is also in three-year partnership with LIV GOLF.

Speaking during a review meeting of the S4P curriculum in Mponela, Maseko said this is a very important intervention.
"The programme comes at a critical time when many refugees continue to experience the psychological and emotional effects of displacement.

"Sports would provide young people with opportunities for holistic development, healing and interaction across different nationalities, tribes and cultures, while keeping them away from risky behaviours," said Maseko.

UNHCR Project Associate Tapiwa Mkandawire Gumbi said the organization is providing technical guidance, capacity building and oversight to ensure the programme benefits refugees and host communities.

Dzaleka Sports Association Coordinator Babwine Christian said the programme could help address social challenges, including child protection, gender-based violence and early pregnancies.
The programme is targeting sports like basketball, netball, volleyball, tennis and chess.

Currently, the council is in the process of developing a training manual for the A4P curriculum.

NEW SIDZE HEALTH POST ENDS LONG WALK TO HEALTH CARE FOR THOUSANDS

Around 11,000 residents at and surrounding Sidze in Traditional Authority Mponela in Dowa district, are expected to access essential healthcare services closer to their homes following the handover of Sidze Health Post and staff house by Dowa District Council.

The health post costed MK351.6 million while the staff house is worth K300.4 million, both constructed under the Governance to Enable Service Delivery (GESD) with funding from the World Bank.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Dowa central Member of Parliament Annie Chibwana said the new facility is a game changer in access to medical services.

“For many years, people from this area have walked long distances as far as Mponela Health Centre to access healthcare, and the challenge was huge particularly amongst women, expectant mothers and young children.

“This health post will bring services closer to the community and improve access to medical, maternal and child healthcare services. We believe this will encourage more women to seek medical attention during pregnancy and after delivery,” said Chibwana.

Senior Nursing Officer for Dowa District Health Office Lyson Masauko described the handover as an important milestone in improving access to primary healthcare services in the district.

He said the facility will also aid in easing pressure on Mponela Health Centre, and committed that the District Health Office to expedite installing essential medical equipment and supplies to operationalise the health post.

Adeta Makalani of Mtekateka village said the community is thankful as the new facility will help people to get medical assistance right within their community, and in good time.

A major boost for education has come to Nauchi with the handover of the newly constructed Nauchi Community Day Secondary School, built at a cost of MK189.4 million under the World Bank-funded Governance to Enable Service Delivery (GESD) programme.

During the handover on Friday, Member of Parliament for Dowa Mphudzu Arthur Sungitsa urged traditional leaders, parents and guardians to work together in tackling alcohol abuse among young people, describing it as a driver of unproductivity, depression and su***de.

He emphasized that education offers hope, skills and opportunities for a better future, calling on the community to ensure all eligible children remain in school.

Principal Education Officer Abiutee Gwazani said the new school will improve access to quality education by reducing long travel distances, increasing enrolment, attendance and learner retention.

Senior Chief Chakhaza welcomed the development and pledged to mobilize the community to protect and maintain the facility for the benefit of present and future generations.
