Government has disclosed that it is sourcing $200 million for the completion of the Salima-Lilongwe Water Project.

Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Roza Fatch Mbilizi, told the August House that government will deliver its promise to the people of Salima and surrounding districts.

She then disclosed to the House that, government will commission the transformative project by June 2027.

The $315 million (about K535 billion) infrastructure initiative seeks to pump and treat 100 million liters of water daily from Lake Malawi in Salima District to serve Lilongwe City, Salima and Dowa districts.

Hopes for an improved economy are skyrocketing as the country has secured a multibillion Kwacha market for its industrial h**p in Germany.

Making the disclosure to MIJ Online, Chauncy Jere, Board Chairperson for the Cannabis Regulatory Authority, said the market is worth over K340 billion.

Aside from Germany, Jere has told us that the country is also exporting the product to Poland and Macedonia, where it is highly demanded by pharmaceutical companies.

In an interview, Jere revealed that previously the country had been struggling to find markets due to substandard products, something which has now been addressed.

Jere has said industrial h**p has the potential to turn around the nation’s economy if the country strives in cultivating the right varieties of the crop as demanded locally and internationally.

According to the regulator, over 80 farmers have been registered this far.

Minister of Defence Honourable Dr. Feston Kaupa has dismissed allegations that the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) is grabbing land from surrounding communities, stating that the military is only reclaiming and re-establishing the boundaries of land that has legally belonged to the force for many years.

Responding to concerns raised in Parliament by Nkhata Bay South legislator, Emily Chinthu Phiri, who asked the MDF to release idle land to locals for farming, Dr. Kaupa said the land in question is legally designated for military use and remains essential to the force's operations.

He emphasized that the MDF's primary responsibility is to safeguard Malawi's territorial integrity and ensure the safety and security of its citizens.

Dr. Kaupa acknowledged that the ongoing boundary restoration exercise has revealed widespread encroachment onto military land, leading to misunderstandings and disputes with some surrounding communities.

However, he maintained that the exercise is intended to protect government property rather than acquire additional land.

The minister also warned that military training involves live-fire exercises and other hazardous activities, making it unsafe for civilians to live or cultivate crops within or near designated training areas.

He appealed to affected communities to cooperate with authorities and relocate from military land to protect their lives and avoid potential danger.

True definition of A People Centered Government! Money channelled down to the people, not being shared amongst friends, family members, concubines, acquaintances the way MCP was doing!!

With 15 billion kwacha so far disbursed through CDF, small scale entrepreneurs are expected to boost their businesses, have their business ideas funded which will in turn create employment opportunities and spur economic growth at household, community and national level! Between 2014 and 2020, the country's economy grew by over 3.5%. It is quite unfortunate that during Chakwera's five year reign, the economy only grew by 1.2%.
