Article 3 - Now that you’ve completed your studies, what are you doing?

Professionally, I work with SBM Bank (Mauritius) as an Asset and Liability Management (ALM) Analyst. In this role, I work in areas related to interest rate risk analysis, liquidity monitoring, and balance sheet management. I particularly enjoy the dynamic nature of the work, especially in the context of today’s volatile interest rate environment and its broader financial impact. Moving forward, I aim to grow into a well-rounded and knowledgeable professional in this field.

At the same time, my journey from research assistant to independent researcher continues. I remain involved in collaborative research projects with professors and researchers across Africa. As a conference committee member of the African Finance and Economics Association (AFEA), I contribute to initiatives that promote research exchange and the dissemination of ideas on African economies and development.

Beyond my professional and academic pursuits, my connection with Japan has remained an important part of my life. I am currently self-studying Japanese and preparing for the JLPT examination in July, with the goal of further deepening my understanding of the language and culture. This connection also continues through my involvement with the Japan Dodoshima Alumni Association (JDAA), where I serve as Assistant Secretary and an executive member. Together with organisations such as JICA and the Embassy of Japan in Mauritius, we organise activities that promote cultural exchange and strengthen relations between Japan and Mauritius.

As a former scholarship recipient, I believe it is important to continue contributing toward initiatives that strengthen cultural and educational ties between both countries. Looking back, I remain deeply grateful for a journey that has played a meaningful role in shaping who I am today.

Article 2 - How was your experience in Japan as a MEXT scholar?

When I left Mauritius for Japan, I thought I had prepared myself well. Yet once I arrived, it felt like stepping into an entirely new life, one that no amount of preparation could truly prepare me for.

Somewhere along the journey, I found myself slowly searching for my place in this new world. I met professors who felt more like guides and friends who became lifeboats throughout a journey that was not always smooth. There were moments shaped by academic stagnation, failed research models, loneliness driven by my own over expectations and ambitiousness, and the quiet struggles that come with adulthood far away from home.

Yet amidst those struggles came some of the most rewarding moments of my life. Successfully defending my research and the recognition that followed from the President of the University reminded me why I chose this path in the first place. Through the Global Leadership Program with Taktopia, I had the opportunity to share Mauritius and its culture with Japanese high school students, an experience that unexpectedly deepened my appreciation for my own roots and identity.

Beyond university, travelling alone across Japan became one of the most transformative parts of my experience. Through meetup groups and conversations with people from all walks of life and different generations, I was exposed to perspectives, stories, and ways of thinking that I would never have encountered otherwise. Those interactions reminded me how vast the world truly is, and how much growth can come from simply listening to others and stepping outside of your own familiar environment.

Most importantly, Japan taught me discipline. The idea of continuous self-improvement (kaizen), slowly became part of how I approached research, work, and life itself. By the end of it all, I realised that the person who travelled from Mauritius was not the same person returning home.

Article 1 - What made you apply for the MEXT scholarship?

There was no question that Japan presented a compelling academic case. Its leadership in innovation and production of quality papers offered a research landscape unlike any other. But beyond academics, it was Japan itself that drew me in. I had long been captivated by the way Japanese society moves, with its deep respect for others, its balance with the natural world, and its quiet discipline in everyday life. I understand that what some might call conformity, I came to see instead as a form of collective mindfulness and a culture that values the whole without erasing the individual.

As someone naturally introverted, I have often felt more at peace in solitude and quiet moments than in highly social environments. Growing up, I sometimes found it difficult to fully connect with spaces where constant social engagement was the norm. This, in turn, drew me toward cultures that place value on quietness and personal space. In many ways, Japan represented a society that felt closer to my own nature. At the same time, I was aware that such harmony is not without its complexities. The same unspoken rules that sustain social order can also create pressure, and I became interested in understanding how individuals navigate this balance in their daily lives.

I have also long been curious about belief systems, which led me to Shintoism. Its reverence for nature and the balance it seeks between humans and their surroundings struck me deeply. I wanted to understand this not just academically, but through lived experience.

Certificate award ceremony for the fish processing business training: The Project for the Improvement of Livelihood of Coastal Communities Through Sustainable Development of Blue Economy(27/4/2026)
「沿岸域ブルーエコノミーの持続的開発を通じたコミュニティ生計改善プロジェクト」水産加工ビジネス研修修了式(2026年4月27日)

On 27th April, Ambassador KAN, together with the Honorouble Dr. Boolell, the Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries attended the certificate award ceremony for the fish processing business training held under the JICA’s technical assistance project for “The Project for the Improvement of Livelihood of Coastal Communities Through Sustainable Development of Blue Economy”
The training was organised with the aim of increasing income and diversifying livelihoods within coastal fishing communities. It was designed to help participants—who had previously relied on the sale of fresh fish—to add value by processing and selling fish, thereby expanding their revenue opportunities as small-scale businesses. A total of 81 participants successfully completed the training.
At the ceremony, equipment such as a kitchen trailer was handed over, and participants enjoyed fried fish prepared using the provided equipment. Going forward, this equipment will be used by coastal fishing communities to sell processed fish products.
