Team Coaching: Reflecting on Boundaries

It was a pleasure to attend yesterday’s EMCC webinar on Team Coaching.

While the session offered great depth and detail, what stayed with me most was the reflection on boundaries. It served as a reminder of the multiple, dynamic lines we must navigate and continually attend to within team coaching:

■ What are my boundaries as a coach?
■ What are the boundaries of the organisation and the sponsor?
■ What belongs uniquely to the team leader versus the individual team members?

Navigating this is fundamentally an act of care. As coaches, how do we remain attentive to the needs of the organisation, the sponsor, the leader, and the team members, while also honoring our own needs and boundaries as practitioners?

These boundaries are rarely static, of course. They are fluid, overlapping, and constantly shifting as the coaching relationship and the team evolve.

Holding them requires a continuous balancing act, remaining mindful of what is emerging in the system, who holds responsibility for what, and whether our established boundaries continue to serve the process.

A valuable takeaway and a core tenet of my own practice: boundaries require ongoing attention, not just initial definition.

How do you navigate shifting boundaries when working with complex team systems?

You don’t have to say more to sound confident.

Something I hear quite often in coaching is that people in leadership roles can feel intimidated by colleagues who speak a lot.

Sometimes, these colleagues are not as senior. They may not have the same level of expertise or experience. Yet they speak with such certainty and keep adding to what they have said that it can make someone who has far more to contribute question themselves.

Perhaps I should be saying more.

Perhaps I’m not coming across as confident enough.

I often think the opposite is true.

Being able to say exactly what needs to be said, and then stop, is a remarkably valuable communication skill.

You don’t need to add another point because someone else has spoken for five minutes.

You don’t need to keep explaining an idea you have already expressed clearly.

Nor do you need to fill the silence simply because someone else is comfortable filling it.

Saying the actual point, clearly and thoughtfully, without adding anything unnecessary, is the most confident thing you can do.

Public Speaking and Presentation Skills at the Malta Society of Arts.

I am very pleased to be delivering a six-week course in Public Speaking and Presentation Skills at the Malta Society of Arts this November.

This time around, I am particularly looking forward to bringing my work in public speaking into the artistic community.

There is something rather lovely about this meeting point. Some artists may be used to being on stage, but public speaking asks for a different kind of presence, whether presenting an idea, introducing your work, speaking to an audience, or simply finding your voice with greater ease.

Across six weeks, we will explore practical ways of developing confidence, presence, voice and communication skills, whilst making plenty of space for playfullness and exploration.

I am looking forward to this one. 😊

How well does your team communicate when it matters?

Your people may be highly skilled and knowledgeable in what they do, but how confidently are they communicating that knowledge?

Can they present their ideas clearly?

Are they confident enough to speak up in meetings?

Do they communicate with confidence when the stakes are high?

Do they represent themselves and the organisation effectively?

Often, people don't need more knowledge. They need the confidence to communicate what they already know.

I train individuals and teams in public speaking, presentation skills, professional communication and confidence building, drawing on my background in coaching, teaching, and research in theatre and performance.

My approach is practical and experiential, helping people become more aware of how they communicate and, importantly, giving them tools they can actually use.

If developing communication skills within your organisation is something you've been considering, I'd be very happy to have a conversation.

Are You Rehearsing Your Words or Your Presence?

When preparing for an important presentation, many professionals spend a considerable amount of time going over what they are going to say.

This makes perfect sense. You want to know your material, remember key points, and feel prepared.

There is, however, another layer to preparation that is often overlooked: how you are going to be whilst delivering it.

What happens to your body when you stand up?

Where does your breath go?

Do you allow yourself to look at the audience, or do you immediately retreat into your notes?

What happens to your voice when you reach a point you find particularly important?

What kind of energy do you want to bring into the room?

Actor training has taught me that rehearsal is not only about repeating words until they become familiar. It is also about mastering the physical and vocal experience of delivering them.

The aim is not to produce a perfectly rehearsed performance but to know the content well enough that you can remain present whilst communicating it.

When the words are no longer taking up all your attention, you have more space to listen, breathe, look, respond, and connect.
