𝐍𝐎 𝐈𝐍𝐕𝐈𝐒𝐈𝐁𝐋𝐄 𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐋𝐃 (𝐍𝐈𝐂) 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐉𝐄𝐂𝐓: 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚’𝐬 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥

Liberia continues to face a serious education challenge. UNICEF reports that 𝟑𝟔% 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝟑–𝟏𝟖 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥, while 29.7% of children aged 6–15—the official primary and lower-secondary school-age group—are out of school.

In response, the 𝐍𝐨 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 (𝐍𝐈𝐂) 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 is bringing organizations together to identify out-of-school children ages 14–18, engage their families, and create pathways for them to return to education.

The initiative brings together 𝐋𝐘𝐅𝐓 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚, 𝐔𝐩𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐘𝐄𝐀𝐑 𝐋𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚, 𝐆𝐏𝐁𝐍𝐄𝐓 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥, 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚 (𝐀𝐔𝐘𝐂𝐋), 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 (𝐂𝐇𝐃𝐀𝐈), 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐖𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 (𝐄𝐖𝐍).

𝐎𝐧 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟏𝟏, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, the collaborating organizations launched the initiative through a Kick-off Workshop focused on implementation strategies, education and peace, safeguarding and referral pathways, and mental health support. As a demonstration of their shared commitment, six organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate in implementing the project.

On September 1, 2026, the partnership moved from planning to action when volunteers from LYFT Africa and Upskill Africa Foundation engaged the administration of 𝟕𝟐𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐲-𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐏𝐚𝐲𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞, 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲, 𝐋𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚. The school welcomed the NIC Initiative and committed to accepting out-of-school children and working with the project to support their return to education.

This is the power of partnership. Tackling Liberia's out-of-school challenge requires more than the efforts of one organization. It requires schools, communities, families, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to combine their resources, expertise, networks, and commitment. Thanks to our hardworking volunteers, including Sunnie Antonio Marcar Jr. and Powell, for their coordinon.

The journey has begun. The next step is to identify and recruit out-of-school children within the 72nd Community and help them find their way back to the classroom.

When organizations work together, children get a second chance. When communities collaborate, no child has to remain invisible.

The event served as a platform to educate, inspire, and empower children to become advocates for healthy hygiene practices, environmental cleanliness, and the protection of children's rights.⁣⁣

One of the most remarkable features of this year's celebration was that 98% of the program activities were led and executed by children themselves. From the opening prayer and welcome remarks to introductions, dramatic performances, statements, and presentations, the children demonstrated confidence, leadership, creativity, and a strong sense of responsibility. Their active participation reflected the true spirit of the Day of the African Child—amplifying the voices of children and recognizing their role as leaders of today and tomorrow.⁣⁣

The 𝐤𝐞𝐲𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐌𝐫𝐬. Mariam Dukuly, a Youth Development Advocate, Information Technology Specialist, and volunteer leader with LYFT Africa. In her inspiring message, she highlighted the history and significance of the Day of the African Child and reminded students that access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene is a fundamental right, not a privilege. She challenged the children to become ambassadors of positive hygiene practices in their schools and communities and emphasized the connection between clean water, good health, and quality education. ⁣⁣

Mrs. Dukuly also acknowledged the challenges many Liberian children still face in accessing safe water and sanitation facilities while celebrating the progress Liberia has made through community initiatives, government efforts, and development partnerships. She encouraged students to dream big, stay committed to their education, and use their talents to create positive change. Concluding her address, she reminded the children that they are not only the leaders of tomorrow but also important change-makers today.⁣⁣

Youth Development Advocate | Information Technology Specialist | Volunteer Leader | Public Relations Professional Mariam Dukuly is a passionate youth development advocate, and community volunteer dedicated to empowering young people and advancing sustainable community development in Liberia. With several years of experience in youth engagement, mentorship, leadership development, and public relations, she has distinguished herself as a committed champion for the welfare, education, and empowerment of children and young people.⁣
⁣
Mariam currently serves as the Mentor and Volunteer Coordinator of LYFT Africa, where she plays a key role in planning, coordinating, and implementing impactful community programs and youth-centered initiatives. Through her leadership and service, she has contributed to the successful ex*****on of educational outreach activities, anti-drug awareness campaigns, leadership development programs, school club initiatives, mentorship activities, and humanitarian interventions benefiting children and young people across Liberia.⁣
As a youth advocate, Mariam is particularly passionate about addressing issues affecting adolescent girls and vulnerable youth. Her work focuses on menstrual hygiene awareness, sexual and reproductive health education, teenage pregnancy prevention, career development, and mentoring young girls to become confident and responsible leaders within their communities. She is also actively involved in anti-drug awareness and counseling programs aimed at supporting at-risk youth and promoting healthy lifestyles.⁣
⁣
Through her involvement with LYFT Africa and other community initiatives, Mariam has helped contribute to the implementation of more than 53 development programs that have collectively impacted over 250,000 beneficiaries across Liberia. These interventions have been supported through grants, donations, volunteer contributions, and partnerships aimed at improving the lives of children, youth, and marginalized communities.⁣

Known for her strong communication skills, adaptability, innovation, and commitment to service, Mariam has earned recognition among her peers as a hardworking and dependable leader who is dedicated to creating opportunities for others. Her experience in organizing youth programs, mentoring students, establishing school clubs, and promoting civic engagement has enabled her to positively influence countless young people throughout Liberia.⁣

A graduate of O'Nance International School and a certificate holder from Girls in Tech, Mariam combines her technological knowledge with her passion for social impact to inspire young people to embrace education, leadership, innovation, and community service.⁣

On June 16, 2026, LYFT Africa will join the rest of the continent in commemorating the International Day of the African Child under the theme "𝐄𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐲𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚," as declared by the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC). This year's theme highlights the critical role that water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) play in the survival, health, education, and development of African children.⁣

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘓𝘪𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢'𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴.⁣

Although Liberia is one of the wettest countries in Africa, access to safe drinking water and sanitation remains a challenge for many children and communities. According to UNICEF Liberia, nearly 90% of Liberians still face limited access to safe drinking water, while less than 10% have access to safely managed drinking water and sanitation services. Open defecation remains a concern in many communities, contributing to preventable diseases that disproportionately affect children.⁣
⁣
The education sector of our nation Liberia continues to feel the impact of inadequate WASH facilities. UNICEF reports that only 58% of schools in Liberia have access to safe drinking water, while only 56% have functional sanitation facilities. The lack of clean water and proper sanitation contributes to absenteeism, illness, and school dropout, especially among adolescent girls.⁣

Yet, there is reason for hope.⁣
⁣
Recent WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme data indicate that approximately 79% of Liberians now have access to basic drinking water services, reflecting important progress made through government initiatives, development partners, and community-driven interventions.⁣
⁣
For years, LYFT Africa has celebrated the International Day of the African Child by empowering children through educational events, mentorship, advocacy, talent development, and community engagement. Through these celebrations, we have amplified children's voices while promoting their rights and well-being.⁣

As we prepare for the 2026 celebration, we call upon government institutions, schools, development partners, community leaders, parents, and child advocates to join us in advancing a Liberia where every child enjoys access to clean water, safe sanitation, quality education, and equal opportunities to thrive.⁣

Through our previous trainings across Liberia—including in River Gee and Margibi Counties—participants have been empowered with public speaking, leadership, and community engagement skills, while learning the Five Key Styles of Leadership and the Ten Principles of Servant Leadership. These trainings have inspired 100% of participants to commit to volunteerism, becoming active members of LYFT Africa and contributing to impactful community initiatives.
