(Monrovia, Liberia), The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has welcomed the sentencing of five women to 20 years in prison each for trafficking 14 minors and engaging in criminal conspiracy, hailing the ruling as a strong step in safeguarding children across Liberia.

The judgment was delivered on Monday by Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie at Criminal Court “A”, Temple of Justice, Monrovia, during the February Term in Montserrado County.

The convicted women, Halimantu Daramy, Grace Sesay, Hawa Kamara, Henrita Beayce, and Famata Doe, were prosecuted by the Ministry of Justice with support from the Ministry’s legal team after being arrested on April 10, 2025, at the Red Light transport hub in Monrovia by officers of the Liberia Immigration Service.

The women were traveling with the 14 children, most of whom were later found not to be their biological offspring.

Investigators from the Liberia National Police revealed that the women planned to transport the children through neighboring countries, including Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso, en route to Mali, intending to exploit them for financial gain from humanitarian resettlement programs. Evidence also showed that the same group had previously attempted a similar scheme in 2024, bringing eight children to Mali and receiving support from international organizations, including the International Organization for Migration and the Red Cross.

All five women received 20-year prison sentences, with immediate enforcement at Monrovia Central Prison. The court ordered the Ministry of Gender to continue custody of the 14 children, providing them with food, shelter, healthcare, and education. DNA testing will verify any claims of parental or familial rights before custody changes.

Gender Minister Gbeme Horace-Kollie said:
"We welcome this verdict and applaud the court for reinforcing Liberia’s commitment to ending child trafficking. The Ministry remains steadfast in protecting children and ensuring justice for the most vulnerable in our society."

Minister Horace-Kollie also commended the Ministry’s legal team for their strong collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, which was instrumental in ensuring that justice was served.

The case underscores the ongoing need to combat child trafficking in West Africa, where poverty and porous borders often make children vulnerable to exploitation.

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection reaffirms its firm stance against child trafficking and calls on all Liberians, communities, and partners to remain vigilant in protecting our children and upholding their rights. Justice has been served, and the safety of our children remains our highest priority.

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection strongly condemned a disturbing case of alleged child cruelty reported in Johnsonville, involving a minor identified as Moses.

According to credible information gathered from community members, the child was allegedly forced to consume his own f***s, an act the Ministry describes as inhumane, degrading, and a gross violation of the rights and dignity of the child.

The incident is reported to have occurred during the early morning hours of Sunday, March 22, 2026, and is alleged to have been carried out by a woman identified as Angel Tokpah, who claimed to be the child’s aunt.

Following a tip-off, a team from the Ministry swiftly visited the community. However, the child had already been relocated prior to their arrival. The Ministry confirms that the alleged perpetrator has been turned over to the police and remains in custody, while efforts are ongoing to locate the child to ensure he receives immediate medical attention and appropriate protection services.

The Ministry emphasizes that it treats all forms of violence against children with zero tolerance and assures the public that this matter is being handled with the utmost urgency.

The Ministry further calls on community members to remain vigilant and to report any suspected cases of child abuse or violence through the toll-free GBV Hotline (116) as investigations continue.

Gender Minister Gbeme Horace-Kollie has stressed the need to strengthen alliances with civil society organizations, women’s groups, and local communities to end Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM) in Liberia and across the sub-region.

According to the Minister, FGM remains a major concern and must be addressed through a collective and coordinated approach.

Speaking on the sidelines of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women conference in New York, the Gender Minister emphasized that FGM not only violates the rights of women and girls but also limits their potential and leaves lasting physical and psychological scars.

She noted that it is time for policies to be translated into enforceable laws and fully implemented.

Minister Horace-Kollie reaffirmed the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection’s commitment to protecting women and girls from all harmful practices, including FGM, across Liberia.

Meanwhile, Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Lewis Brown, stated that ending FGM requires a whole-of-society approach.

Ambassador Brown noted that strong political will, community ownership, and sustained investment are critical to eliminating the menace.

According to him, protecting women and girls from FGM strengthens the fabric of society and gives a voice to survivors of the practice.

The Liberian Ambassador made the remarks at a side event organized by the Ministry of Gender during the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women conference in New York on Monday.
