RE: DEMAND FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF PRE-TRIAL DETAINEES AND CLARITY ON DISMISSAL OF JUSTICE MINISTER AND SOLICITOR GENERAL

The Weah Movements 2029 Nationwide Auxiliaries Groups Network wishes to formally inform His Excellency President Joseph Nyumah Boakai of a grave constitutional concern arising from his recent dismissal of Justice Minister Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh and Solicitor General Cllr. Augustine C. Fayiah.

We wish to notify you, Mr. President, that these two officials were the lead government lawyers representing the Government of Liberia in adjudicating cases. Under their signatures, there are numerous citizens currently languishing in prison under prolonged pre-trial detention.

If no tangible reason has been given for their dismissal, then those being held in pre-trial detention under their signatures must, under the law, be freed. They were detained under the signatures of these two government lawyers, they were never tried in a court of competent jurisdiction, and you have now sacked them. This clearly suggests that the government has no evidence against them.

This includes, but is not limited to:
1. The Capitol Building Arson Case,
2. The Jury Tampering Case, and
3. The Former Vice President, Chief Jewel Howard Taylor Case.

In this light, and in accordance with Article 21 (d), (f), (h) of the 1986 Constitution of Liberia, Section 18.2 of the Criminal Procedure Law of Liberia (1972), and International Law under Article 14 (3)(c) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which guarantee a speedy and fair trial, we have called for their immediate release under the law.

Because, according to our reliable sources, it is due to the lack of evidence and lack of prosecutorial power to sustain these cases that you dismissed the two top prosecutors, we demand their release and that their rights be restored.

Furthermore, Mr. President, we urge you to give the Liberian people a concrete reason why these two high-powered officials were dismissed upon the arrival of your political opponent, former President Dr. George Manneh Weah. Their dismissal raises serious suspicion within the public domain, and it is being rumored that the dismissal is on the basis that the Justice Minister failed to order the arrest of former President Weah upon his arrival at the Roberts International Airport (RIA).

Liberia is a country of law, not of men.

We remain committed to the rule of law, human rights, peaceful democracy, and a peaceful Liberia.

Justice Delayed is Justice Denied. Let the People Go.

Signed:
