YES Alumni Liberia This page was created to showcase Alumni of the US government sponsor exchange program- Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study activities in Liberia.

The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program was established by US Congress in October, 2002 in response to the events of September 11, 2001. The program is funded through the U.S. Department of State and sponsored by the Bureau of Educational & Cultural Affairs (ECA) to provide scholarships for high school students (15-17 years) from countries with significant Muslim populations to spend up to one academic year in the U.S. Students live with host families, attend high school, engage in activities to learn about American society and values, acquire leadership skills, and help educate Americans about their countries and cultures. The YES program started in Liberia in 2009 with the first group of six(6) high school student selected from Montserrado County to represent Liberia. Currently, we have over fifteen (15) returnees also known as YES ALUMNI. These returnees have formed the Liberia YES Alumni corps to constructively give back to their societies through their US experience and skills acquired from the program. In 2011, the YES Alumni Corps embarked on its first program the “School Health club” to help high school students understand the importance of proper hygienic practice, to keep the school environment clean and present best practices on waste management within the school environment. The corps currently operates a mini reading room and a computer resource lab in Monrovia. The reading room project was sponsored by the host family of Mohammed Kiawu, an alumnus from Ann Arbor, Michigan. Most of the YES Alumni programs are structure in the following areas: Community Service, community events, training workshops, working with people with disabilities, STI/AIDS awareness Program, water, sanitation and Hygiene and Environmental projects.

YES Alumni Liberia , in partnership with Manevia Forum, highlights a successful STE(A)M engagement led by Manevia aimed at strengthening youth capacity in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.

The session created an interactive and engaging learning space where students explored digital safety, innovation, and the responsible use of technology in today’s digital world. Participants were encouraged to think critically and creatively, applying STE(A)M concepts to real-life challenges, with active support and engagement from YES-Alumni Liberia throughout the session.

This engagement reflects Manevia’s leadership in driving youth-focused innovation and empowerment, strengthened by the collaboration and participation of YES-Alumni Liberia in facilitating and supporting the program.

We appreciate Manevia for leading this impactful initiative, as well as YES-Alumni Liberia, facilitators, and participants who all contributed to its success.

On the 29th of April, YES Alumni Liberia celebrated their GYSD event which brought students together to learn about Digital Safety at Dr. Augustus Othello Kwaidah International Academy. The session provided a structured, practice-oriented learning space where students engaged with real-world scenarios on cyber risks, online privacy, and responsible digital behavior. Through interactive discussions and applied exercises, participants strengthened their understanding of how to navigate digital platforms safely and responsibly.

The initiative aligns with broader youth empowerment and civic engagement goals under global exchange frameworks, including the America 250 agenda, which emphasizes education, leadership development, and cross-cultural collaboration as nations reflect on shared democratic values and future-oriented skills. By equipping young people with digital safety competencies, the workshop contributes to preparing globally aware citizens who can participate meaningfully in an increasingly connected world. The event reflects a commitment to fostering informed, responsible, and resilient youth capable of advancing safe and inclusive digital communities.

Koryeyon W. Talley, YES Alumni 2022, had successfully implemented the Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) Artist Bead-Making Training Project in Paynesville!

With the support of a dedicated team of YES Alumni, this youth-led initiative brought together 40 young people alongside students from Pearson International School for hands-on learning, creativity, and community service.

Participants gained practical bead-making skills and explored entrepreneurship, learning how to turn their creativity into income and opportunity. The energy, teamwork, and talent displayed throughout the training were truly inspiring.

This project was made possible in part through support from the GYSD Matching Grants Program, funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and administered by the American Councils for International Education.

Special thanks to the entire YES Alumni team, facilitators, and participants for making this impact possible. Together, we are empowering youth and building stronger communities.
