The American Center Monrovia hosted an EducationUSA information session on “Why Study in the United States” attended by 20 university and high school students from various institutions within Monrovia.

During the session, participants received valuable insights into the essential requirements for studying in the United States. This included detailed discussions on academic preparation, the significance of standardized testing, and the financial considerations necessary for a successful educational journey at U.S. higher education institutions.

Our advisers also demonstrated how to use essential search tools, such as the Common App, College Board, and Peterson’s, to help students identify institutions that align with their academic goals and personal interests.

A major focus of the session was the financial aspects of studying in the U.S. Our advisers emphasized that families should be prepared to cover up to 80% of tuition and fees, depending on the chosen institution and available scholarships.

The American Center Monrovia organized a session that brought together high school and university students, as well as members of the public, to explore the life and legacy of American hero and author Harper Lee, famed for her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

Participants delved into how Lee used literature to address significant issues such as justice, equality, courage, and empathy. Through an engaging conversation about her work, they reflected on the power of storytelling to challenge stereotypes, foster critical thinking, and inspire individuals to stand against injustice.

Additionally, the discussion connected the subjects Harper Lee wrote about to contemporary life in our communities and around the world, encouraging participants to consider ways in which young people and citizens can promote fairness, respect, empathy, and constructive civic engagement within their communities.

The discussion concluded on the thought that one doesn’t need to be a politician, activist, or public figure to make a difference; often, a powerful story can transform the way people view the world.

Homegrown Liberian innovation took center stage at our alumni trade fair.

U.S. Exchange Alumni transformed the Liberian Learning Center into a marketplace, showcasing local enterprise during our Alumni AI Innovation Conference with Empowerment Squared.

Alumni entrepreneurs presented a nice collection of “Made in Liberia” products and services. Visitors explored tables with handcrafted beaded bags, fresh yogurt and smoothies, natural wellness products, crop seedlings, local food, and more.

Over 60 alumni connected, traded, and built new commercial partnerships, proving how U.S. exchange experiences fuel real economic growth across Liberia.

Congratulations, Omu Sow! The U.S. Embassy in Monrovia is proud to celebrate your incredible achievement! Omu, a graduate of Muslim Congress High School on Mechlin Street, Monrovia, worked closely with our EducationUSA Advising Center to pursue her dream of studying in the United States, and she did it!

She has been admitted to the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, College of Science and Engineering, on a full scholarship! Omu is passionate about contributing to Liberia’s infrastructure design and construction, and we are excited to see the impact she will make following the completion of her studies.

Throughout this journey, Omu demonstrated resilience, focus, and an unwavering commitment to pursuing opportunities to study in the United States. This truly reflects her character, and we are honored to have been part of her story. Well done, Omu! We are cheering you on!

Over 60 U.S. Exchange Alumni gathered at the Liberia Learning Center for an intensive two-day AI Innovation Conference hosted by the U.S. Embassy Monrovia’s Public Diplomacy Section and Empowerment Squared.

The conference focused on practical, real-world tools rather than theory. Alumni entrepreneurs and professionals gained hands-on skills to drive business growth, boost workplace productivity, and build commercial partnerships. The discussion also highlighted the role of U.S. Exchange Alumni in advancing commercial diplomacy and fostering stronger connections between Liberia’s small business community and U.S. partners.

Major General Davidson Forleh, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), led an AFL delegation to Michigan to observe Exercise Northern Strike, a premier, large-scale joint military readiness exercise hosted annually by the Michigan National Guard. This year’s exercise brought together more than 9,000 personnel from 36 states and territories, as well as five partner nations.

During the visit, Major General Forleh participated in strategic discussions with senior military leaders from the Michigan National Guard, the U.S. National Guard Bureau, the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, and the Republic of Latvia. He also had the opportunity to familiarize with cutting-edge defense technologies, equipment, and capabilities showcased during the exercise.

The visit further strengthened the longstanding security cooperation partnership between the Michigan National Guard and the Armed Forces of Liberia, ongoing since 2009 under the U.S. National Guard’s State Partnership Program. The partnership continues to provide opportunities for professional military exchanges, interoperability, and collaboration in support of shared security objectives.

As part of our Freedom 250 AI Summer Bootcamp, 24 high school students in Paynesville explored space science through a special session led by a U.S. Exchange alumna.

Fresh off a visit to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, she shared insights from historic moon missions and deep space telescopes, showing how satellite technology supports everyday tools on Earth like GPS and weather tracking.

In partnership with Empowerment Squared and the Liberian Learning Center, sessions like this inspire young Liberians to see how curiosity, problem solving, and STEM skills can open doors anywhere.

The U.S. Embassy in Monrovia proudly congratulates Mr. Reuben T. Fiamahn, Principal of Worldwide Mission School, for his outstanding achievement in completing the U.S. Department of State’s English for Specific Purpose in the Global Tourism Sector program, in the United States.

Sponsored by the U.S. State Department through the Regional English Language Office, Reuben stayed in the United States for two weeks immersing himself in innovative teaching approaches tailored for tourism themes in the English language classrooms. He engaged in dynamic sessions at Boston University and MIT in Massachusetts, where he interacted with leading experts in the field and toured the prestigious Harvard University. In addition, Reuben collaborated with educators from 23 countries, gaining invaluable insights from a rich tapestry of perspectives.

Mr. Fiamahn is inspired to elevate his teaching practices to new heights, demonstrating an unyielding commitment to innovation and discipline in his work. He understands that maximizing limited classroom resources is essential, and he embodies the responsibility and passion needed to serve his students effectively.
