Press Statement for Immediate Release!
Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
ULFASA leaderships have FAILED to adequately represent its members at ALL of the groups’ recent negotiations with the UL Administration, BoT and the Gol; SIM RE-ECHOES its calls for continuous learning ALTERNATVES amidst any PHYSICAL RENOVATION work at the nation’s premier institution of higher learning!
Pragmatic and courageous revolutionary greetings to you fellow students, allies, the print and electronic media….
The FULL-TIME employees of the University of Liberia Faculty and Staff Association are just being utterly wicked to the students of the University of Liberia, and so are the Administration of the University of Liberia and the current government of Liberia!
After weeks of “GO-SLOW” actions, on August 14, 2026, the University of Liberia Administration and the Board of Trustees issued a joint communication termed as “Official Directive to Return to Work on Monday”, which was the 17th of August 2026, “to guarantee the orderly resumption of classes on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.” The communication from the Faculty and Staff soon brushed off and branded the communication from the BoT and the UL Administration as “the lowest in the history of leadership at the University of Liberia.” on that very day!
Now, if it is the goal of the “GO-SLOW or STRIKE” for faculty and staff of the University of Liberia to stay away from their respective jobs until their demands are met, so be it! Notwithstanding, there is lack of professionalism, wherein the very faculty and staff are paid for a month which they ALL decide not to work for! The Faculty and Staff of the University of Liberia cannot continue to joyfully embrace and enjoy taxpayers’ dollars as ownership! If it is NOT disadvantage and abuse of Taxpayers’ Funds, Humans and Students RIGHTS in the name of FULL-TIME employment status, then, what it is?
A FULL-TIME employee cannot be receiving payment for the services he/she was hired to render, and at the time be acting as advocate for the people whom he/she is to render the services for which payment is given! That is the case of ULFASA!
Does the “welfare” of the Faculty and Staff as well as the “sanctity’ of the University of Liberia Charter and By-laws say that Faculty and Staff members MUST be paid SALARIES for the month they did NOT work, even where their normal vacation break is over, and they still deliberately refuse to work?
Also, does the “welfare” of the Faculty and Staff members as well as the “sanctity’ of the University of Liberia Charter and By-laws say that Faculty and Staff members MUST be paid SALARIES for a month that is NOT associated with their “GO-SLOW OR STRIKE" concerns, even if they deliberately abandoned their respective jobs for such action?
The leaderships of the University of Liberia Faculty and Staff Associations (ULFASA) have failed its members! It sat at a negotiation table with the University of Liberia’s Administration, the Board of Trustees of the University of Liberia, including the President of the Republic of Liberia wining and dining for weeks WITHOUT a second thought of a “WRITTEN” document! It is ONLY at its August 21, 2026, Emergency General Assembly it remembered that “WRITTEN” document needs to be consummated!
Total selfishness it is for ULFASA leaderships and the members thereof to police the education of thousands of students in the name of awaiting a “WRITTEN” document it has FAILED to achieve during all of its past MEETINGS with the University of Liberia Administration, the Board of Trustees of the University and the Government of Liberia since 2024!
Contrastingly and awkwardly, ULFASA members have already begun receiving payments for the month (August 2026) which NO work was done in support of their disengagement from their hired duties and responsibilities to the students! And hearing the tidings of payments to the same faculty and staff who have since reneged to work by the Government of Liberia through the University of Liberia Administration, while students remain home undergoing the adverse effect of selfish decision, is very disappointing and frustrating!
During the Administration of the most recent government of Liberia in 2022, the University of Liberia students stayed out of school for TWO SEMESTERS due to the “GO-SLOW” of the Faculty and Staff which was inclusive of the “PHYSICAL RENOVATION” of the University of Liberia only for them to return, and find out that LITTLE or NOTHING was done! Then came 2024, under the current Administration of Liberia, the University of Liberia students were forced to sit out of school for another TWO SEMSTERS due to the “GO-SLOW” of Faculty and Staff which again was inclusive of the University’s “PHYSICAL RENOVATION” but did NOT materialize! And in 2026, the same story of “PHYSICAL RENOVATION” regarding the University of Liberia by the Liberian government has again surfaced!
Albeit, this time, and because of past experiences, the student body wants ANY of such “PHYSICAL RENOVATION” to be actualized, as the said situation had served as an abrupt obstruction to students, and had ruined normal academic semesters for years!
The concerns being raised by the faculty and staff of the University of Liberia are genuine; however, the leveraging of such concerns to push back on returning to normal academic and administrative functions, while accepting SALARIES without work, are even very much alarming than the very concerns being raised!
In spite of all of the above, and the leadership of the Mighty Student (SIM) knowing that the University of Liberia 2026/2027 Academic Calendar would not have started today, it assembled NOT just to wail ~ rather, to proffer the following pragmatic ALTERNATIVES to keep mounting pressure for continuous learning at the University of Liberia, even in the event the “PHYSICAL RENOVATION” of the University becomes a genuine one!
1. Reactivation of the DIGITAL LEARNING PLATFORM (ONLINE) because, ANY serious short term “PHYSICIAL RENOVATION” of the University of Liberia will surpass four months!
2. Adjustment and Relocation of the University of Liberia academic activities to other government institutions because, ANY short term “PHYSICIAL RENOVATION” of the University will surpass four months!
Amidst the COVID 19 OUT BREAK in Liberia in 2020, the University of Liberia was able to put out Graduates exclusively as a result of the ONLINE LEARNING in 2022. To put simply, ONLINE is not limited to Epidemic alone! It is applicable even during “PHYSICAL RENOVATION”, where large gathering of people are not permitted!
It would be better that the University of Liberia makes maximum use of one of the said ALTERNATIVES in the interim so as to be able to put out Graduates, than to joke around, like Dr. Maparyan normally does of having run seamless semesters from January – December of 2025, but was unable to put out a single Graduate, during the period mentioned, even though she did receive payments for it.
On the other end, the worst thing that the Administration of the University of Liberia, the Board of Trustees of the University of Liberia and the government of Liberia should ever think of, or dream about in this twenty-first century, is the “SHUTTING DOWN” of the University entirely, until a “PHYSICAL RENOVATION” work is completed! NO WAY!
Long live continuous learning at the University of Liberia SIM! OUR WAY OF LIFE! LONG LIVE SIM!
