Two weeks ago our Toyota Land Cruiser was destroyed in an accident. That nobody died is the only good news in this update. The vehicle wasn't covered for full replacement, so this repair isn't something insurance is going to solve for us..
That truck was used to pick up confiscated pangolins, orphaned primates, injured raptors, and rescued crocodiles from checkpoints, to bring feed and medicine back from Monrovia, to reach our field sites and to transport wildlife for reintroductions into Sapo or Gola National Park.
Right now we don't have a vehicle. Our local partners are generous, lending us a vehicle when they can spare them, but that isn't something we can build a rescue operation around. We need to replace it with a vehicle built for Liberia's roads - one that can bring an animal from the bush to our clinic without falling apart on the way.
Replacing a Toyota Land Cruiser in Liberia costs approximately $50,000 including customs. That number is hard to write.. A cheaper or a used vehicle would cost less upfront, but it didn't work out well in the past (breakdowns on remote roads, parts we couldn't get, repairs that took weeks we didn't have..). Our work runs on wheels we no longer have.
