යාල ජාතික වනෝද්‍යානයේ සන්ධ්‍යා කාලයේ රන්වන් ආලෝකය යටතේ මේ ශ්‍රී ලාංකික හිවලා (Canis aureus naria) ඡායාරූපගත කළා. හිරුගෙ රන්වන් කිරණ ඔහුගේ පිරිපුන් කබාය මත වැටී, රන් පැහැයකින් දිලිසෙනවා. වියළි කලාපයේ තණකොළ හා කටු පදුරු තෘණ භූමි තුළ ජීවත් වෙන මේ බුද්ධිමත් වන සත්වයා, ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ එකම හිවල් විශේෂයයි. අප දිහාම එක එල්ලේ බලාගෙන හිටියා. යාල වනෝද්‍යානයේ කාශ්ඨකව ගිය තෘණ භූමියක ඇව්ද යමින් සිටි මේ හිවලා මදක් නැවතී ඔහුගේ සියලු අවධානය අප යොමු කරමින් කන් දෙකම ඉස්සරහට තියාගෙන alert උනේ හරියට මේ මහ වනයේ රහස් කියන්න වගේ. ස්වභාව ධර්මයේම ආලෝකය, පසුබිම උපයෝගී කරන් ලබා ගත් මේ මොහොත අමතක නොවේ!

As the day winds down in Yala, the golden light pours over the plains like liquid amber. This lone Sri Lankan jackal strides confidently through the glow, ears alert and eyes sharp— a true survivor of the island's wild heart. The evening sun brings out the rich rusty hues and subtle flecks in its coat, making this moment feel almost painted by nature itself. Pure wilderness serenity.
The Sri Lankan jackal (scientific name: Canis aureus naria), also called the Southern Indian jackal or simply "නරියා" in Sinhala, is the only jackal species found in Sri Lanka. It's a subspecies of the golden jackal (Canis aureus), native to southern India and throughout Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan jackals are slightly larger than their southern Indian relatives, with a darker, more speckled coat

හෝර්ටන් තැන්න ජාතික වනෝද්‍යානයේ සවස් කාලයකදී මේ කඩවසම් ගෝනා (Sri Lankan Sambar deer) හමුවුණා. සවස් මීදුම එක්ක එළිය අඩුයි, සෑම තැනම මෘදු, සිහින් ආලෝකයකින් වට වෙලා තිබුණා. මේ උස්බිම්වලටම ආවේණික ලස්සනක්!

එළිය අඩු තත්වයක තිබුණත්, මේ නාඹර ගෝනා තමන්ගේ විශාල අං මත වියළි කොළ තන්තු ගොඩක් තියාගෙන ඉන්නවා දැක්කම හරියට රජකම් කරන්න ඔටුනු පලන් කුමාරයෙක් වගේ!! එයාට තියෙන්නෙ පුදුම තේජසක් නේද?

මීදුම එක්ක එළිය අඩු වුණත්, ඒකට එරෙහිව සටන් කරන්නේ නැතුව ඒ මෘදු ආලෝකය භාවිතා කරලා මේ portrait එක ගත්තා. සමහර වෙලාවට මීදුම තමයි හොඳම සහකරුවා වෙන්නේ!

Crowned in Style.

Caught this impressive Sri Lankan Sambar deer (ගෝනා / gōṇā) during a late afternoon stroll in Horton Plains National Park. The evening mist had rolled in thick, stealing most of the sunlight and wrapping everything in that soft, ethereal glow only the highlands can deliver.
Despite the low light and challenging conditions, this big boy stood proud with his massive antlers dramatically adorned in dried grass — almost like nature decided to gift him a rustic crown for the portrait! 🏞️
These magnificent creatures are the largest deer species in Sri Lanka, with mature stags reaching up to 270–280 kg and roaming in large herds across the park's grasslands and montane forests. Horton Plains is one of the best places to encounter them, and moments like this remind me why I keep returning to this magical landscape.
Shot handheld in the fading light — embracing the mist rather than fighting it. Sometimes the soft, diffused conditions create the most intimate wildlife portraits.

I Am Watching You"

එදා හරිම විඩාපත් දවසක්, දවස පුරාම හිරු රැස් යට දූලි මාර්ගවල ගමන් කළා. එකත් sightings නැතුව, සම්පූර්ණයෙන්ම හිස් දවසක්. වනජීවි ඡායාරූපකරණය කියන්නෙ එහෙම තමයි සමහර දවස්වල මොකුත් sightings නෑ. ඉතින් කැමරා ඇසුරුම් කරගෙන හිස් අතින්ම ආපසු යන ගමන් තමයි මේ අපූරු ශ්‍රී ලාංකික කොටියා (Panthera pardus kotiya) මුලිච්චි උනේ. රූස්ස ගසක් යට විවේක ගන්නවා. හරිම තියුණු බැල්මක් තියෙන කොට් දෙනක් මේ.

දවස අවසානයේ තරමක් මොට අඳුරු ආලෝකය යටතේ තාක්ෂණිකව ඡායාරූපයක් ගන්න අභියෝගාත්මක තත්වයක්. Studio එහෙක තියලා ගන්නවා වගේ නෙමී. Canon 7D Mark II කැමරාව සමඟ Canon 400mm lens එක භාවිතා කළා. ඒ තියුණු ඇස් අප දිහා සෘජුවම බලාගෙන හිටියා. ඒක නම් පුදුම eye to eye contact එකක් . මේ හමුවීම නිසා මහන්සිය කොහේ ගියාද නෑ. අමතක නොවන දවසක්.

After a long, exhausting day of safari under the relentless sun, no sightings, just endless dust trails and quiet disappointment, we were heading back to the exit gate, already mentally packing away the cameras. That's wildlife photography: patience tested, expectations humbled, and rewards that come only when you least expect them.
Then, just off the track, this magnificent Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) appeared, lounging regally beneath a tree in the fading light. The island's apex predator, endemic and elusive, ruler of Wilpattu's vast wilderness, home to one of the densest leopard populations outside Africa.
Low light, challenging conditions, but the Canon 7D Mark II with the 400mm lens held steady. And those eyes… piercing, unblinking, locked straight into the lens in an intense eye-to-eye stare. He wasn't just resting; he was assessing, aware, commanding the moment.
A reminder that the wild doesn't perform on schedule. It rewards persistence, respect, and a bit of luck. This encounter turned an ordinary tiring day into one I'll never forget.

Tickell's Blue Flycatcher – A Jewel of the Forest

කිතුල්ගලේ ඝන කොළ ආවරණයෙන් යුත් වනාන්තර අතුරු මාර්ගයක,කුඩා පදුරු ගසක නිහඬව හිඳගත් මේ සුන්දර ටිකල් නිල්-මැසිමාරාව මගේ හද බැද ගත්තා. ගැඹුරු නිල් පැහැති උඩුකය සහ පිටුපස, උණුසුම් රන්වන්-කහ පැහැති බෙල්ල සහ පපුව එකතු වෙලා තියෙන මේ වර්ණ සංයුතිය ආසියාවේ උෂ්ණ කලාපීය කුරුල්ලන් අතරින් වඩාත්ම ආකර්ෂණීය එකෙක්.
මේ විශේෂය විවෘත කඳුකර වනාන්තර, වනාන්තර මායිම්, පඳුරු බිම්, ගංගා ආශ්‍රිත ප්‍රදේශවල ජීවත් වෙනවා, කිතුල්ගලේ ඝන ශාක ආවරණය, අතුගංගා දිය ඇලි ආශ්‍රිතයට හරියටම ගැලපෙනවා. කෘමිභක්ෂකයෙක් විදිහට, පහළ ශාඛාවල ඉඳගෙන ඉන්නකොට පියාඹන කෘමීන් අල්ලාගන්න එයා ඉතාමත් දක්ෂයි. එයාගේ මනරම්, උස් හඬින් ටින් ටින් කියන ගීතය බොහෝ වෙලාවට බලන්න කලින්ම අහන්න පුළුවන්.
බ්‍රිතාන්‍ය කුරුළු විද්‍යාඥ Samuel Tickell ගේ බිරිඳට නම් කරපු මේ කුරුල්ලා ඉන්දියාව, ශ්‍රී ලංකාව ඇතුළු ඉන්දියානු උපමහාද්වීපය පුරා ව්‍යාප්ත වෙලා තියෙනවා. කෙසේ වෙතත් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ආවේණික jerdoni උපවිශේෂයක් විදිහට වෙන්කරලා තියෙනවා (කුඩාවට දිගු බිල්ලක් තියෙනවා). එයා ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ස්ථිර වාසයකරුවෙක්, කිතුල්ගල වගේ තැන්වල මාර්තු සිට අගෝස්තු දක්වා අභිජනන කාලයේදී බහුලව දකින්න පුළුවන්.
වනාන්තරයේ මෘදු, ආලෝකයෙන් බෙදුණු ආලෝකය යටතේ මේක ඡායාරූපගත කරගන්න ලැබුණු එක සැබෑ සතුටක් – ඒ තද නිල් පැහැය සහ රන්වන් පපුව කොළ පසුබිමට එරෙහිව ඉතාමත් ලස්සනට දිලිසෙනවා!

Perched quietly on a branch amid the lush, misty greenery of Kithulgala, this vibrant male Tickell's Blue Flycatcher caught my eye with his striking contrast of deep azure-blue upperparts and warm orange-rufous throat and breast. The white belly completes the classic color palette that makes this small passerine one of the most eye-catching birds in tropical Asia.
This species thrives in open hill forests, forest edges, scrubby areas, and often near streams or water, exactly the kind of habitat Kithulgala offers with its mix of dense vegetation, rivers, and secondary growth. An insectivore by nature, it sits upright on low perches, sallying out to sn**ch flying insects in true flycatcher style. Its pleasant, high-pitched tinkling song often betrays its presence before you spot the flash of blue.
Named after the wife of British ornithologist Samuel Tickell, this bird breeds across the Indian subcontinent, including Sri Lanka (where the local subspecies jerdoni shows a slightly longer bill). In Sri Lanka, it's a resident species commonly encountered in places like Kithulgala, especially during the breeding season from March to August.
A real treat to photograph in the soft, dappled light of the understory—those intense blues and oranges really pop against the green backdrop!
