Research Literacy Seminar Series No. 01
How to Conduct a Literature Review Effectively Using Effective Searching Techniques

The Research Library & Information Center of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, is pleased to announce the launch of its Research Literacy Seminar Series designed to strengthen undergraduates’ academic and research skills.

The first seminar in the series, titled “How to Conduct a Literature Review Effectively Using Effective Searching Techniques”, will focus on practical strategies for identifying, accessing, and evaluating scholarly sources. Participants will gain valuable insights into advanced searching methods and techniques that help in finding relevant research materials and assessing their credibility.

• Venue: K3 – 001 (Faculty of Social Sciences Computer Lab)

🎤 Resource Persons:
Mrs. Dilhani Munasinghe
Senior Assistant Librarian, Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo
and Mrs. Chandima Wedasinghe, Senior Assistant Librarian, the same institute.

🔎 Key Learning Outcome:
Students will learn how to find reliable research sources and critically evaluate them by applying advanced searching techniques, an essential skill for producing high-quality academic work.

This seminar will be an excellent opportunity for undergraduates to enhance their research competencies, preparing them for both academic success and future scholarly pursuits.

▶️Academic Integrity and Efficiency Workshop: Harnessing Mendeley for Effective Reference Management📍

On November 11, 2024, Ms. Dilhani Munasinghe, Senior Assistant Librarian Grade I at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo, and currently a Senior Lecturer on sabbatical at the University of Kelaniya, conducted an insightful workshop titled "Academic Integrity and Efficiency: Harnessing Mendeley for Effective Reference Management." This session took place in the Faculty Board Room of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Kelaniya. The workshop aimed to enhance research skills by emphasizing the role of literature in research and the essential practices of organizing bibliographies and managing citations. Participants, including faculty members and students, gained valuable insights into the structure and purpose of a literature review and its significance in academic writing. This was coordinated by Ms,. Nadeeka Rathnabahu Director of the REsearch Library and Information Centre , Faculty of Social Sciences and Ms, JM Oshani Jayamanne Temporary assistant Lecturer attached department of Library and Information science, University of Kelaniya help to fruitful this task.

Key Highlights of the Session:

Understanding Literature Reviews: Ms. Munasinghe highlighted the goals of a literature review and the importance of a well-organized list of references to support research arguments and maintain academic integrity.

Introduction to Mendeley: Attendees were introduced to Mendeley, a powerful reference management tool. The session covered:

Setting up and organizing a Mendeley library
Managing documents and references
Using Mendeley to cite references and generate bibliographies
Sharing references and collaborating through Mendeley Groups
Utilizing Mendeley Web for seamless research workflow.
Best Practices: Practical tips on organizing bibliographies, managing citations, and enhancing research efficiency were shared, empowering participants to streamline their research processes and maintain accurate citations.

This hands-on session was highly beneficial for students and researchers, equipping them with essential skills in reference management and academic integrity.
