Choi Woo-hyuk, Director General for High Technology Industry at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources (MOTIR, Minister JK Kim), delivered opening remarks and chaired a meeting at Sejong on September 1, 2026, to discuss the development of innovation infrastructure for the Battery Triangle Belt.

The meeting brought together officials from local governments, including Chungcheongbuk-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Jeollabuk-do, as well as representatives from relevant organizations.

“The Battery Triangle Belt is a critical national initiative to establish an integrated national battery supply chain network,” Director General Choi said. “We will work closely with local governments to maximize the strengths of each specialized complex and ensure that support projects at each hub proceed smoothly.”

Minister JK (Jung-Kwan) Kim of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources (MOTIR) attended the G20 Innovation Ministerial in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on September 2, 2026.

The meeting brought together U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and industry and innovation ministers from Japan, India, Germany, and other G20 members. The attendees discussed Intellectual Property Policies for Artificial Intelligence; AI for Standards and Standards for AI; and Industrial Innovation and Investment in Supply Chains.

“AI is rapidly transforming research, creation, and innovation,” Minister Kim said. “IP systems should evolve so that IP rights and AI innovation reinforce each other.”

Kwon Hye-jin, Deputy Minister for Trade Negotiations at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources (MOTIR, Minister JK Kim), attended the 16th round of follow-up negotiations on services and investment under the Korea–China Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in Beijing on August 31, 2026.

Around 30 officials from the two countries took part. Deputy Minister Kwon led the Korean delegation, while Chen Chao, Director-General of the Department of International Trade and Economic Affairs at China’s Ministry of Commerce, headed the Chinese delegation.

Following her opening remarks, Deputy Minister Kwon and Director-General Chen discussed market access and other issues in services, investment, and finance. “We will do our utmost to secure a lasting outcome that brings practical benefits to Korean companies,” Deputy Minister Kwon said.

On August 26, 2026, Minister JK (Jung-Kwan) Kim of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources (MOTIR) and Minister Le Manh Hung of Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade co-chaired the 15th Korea-Vietnam Industrial Joint Committee and the 9th Korea-Vietnam FTA Joint Committee at Lotte Hotel Seoul.

Government delegations from both countries attended the meetings. Following his opening remarks, Minister Kim discussed with the participants ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the real economy.

“Korea will broaden bilateral trade and investment into forward-looking sectors and work more closely with Vietnam to build advanced industrial ecosystems, cultivate talent in industrial technology, strengthen critical mineral supply chains, and enhance energy security,” Minister Kim said.

Lee Min-young, Acting Director General for Trade Agreement Negotiations at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources (MOTIR, Minister JK Kim), attended the 13th round of negotiations to upgrade the Korea–India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in Seoul on August 19, 2026.

The meeting brought together negotiating delegations from both countries, including Kapil Chaudhary, Joint Secretary at India’s Department of Commerce. The two sides discussed goods, services, rules of origin, technical barriers to trade, supply chains, and industrial cooperation.

MOTIR said, “Through the upgrade negotiations, we will lay the foundation for economic cooperation that extends beyond traditional market access to supply chain and industrial cooperation between the two countries.”

On August 14, 2026, TerraPower and SK Innovation signed in Seoul a term sheet for an agreement to pursue joint global projects. The signing was witnessed by Minister JK (Jung-Kwan) Kim of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources (MOTIR), TerraPower Founder and Chairman Bill Gates, and SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won.

“With their ability to deliver projects on time and within budget, Korean companies can play a central role in turning TerraPower’s vision into reality,” said Minister Kim.

Minister JK (Jung-Kwan) Kim of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources (MOTIR) and Chairperson Choi Won-ho of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) signed an MOU on regulatory cooperation at the Korea Trade Insurance Corporation (K-SURE) in Seoul on August 13, 2026.

Representatives from relevant organizations, including the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS), and Korea Institute of Nuclear Nonproliferation and Control (KINAC), attended the ceremony. Minister Kim also witnessed the signing of a separate MOU among five organizations, including the Korea Nuclear Association for International Cooperation.

“The agreement provides a formal basis for linking nuclear power exports with regulatory cooperation and pooling the expertise of the agencies and participating organizations,” said Minister Kim. “With NSSC, KINS, and KINAC as core Team Korea partners, we will address the diverse cooperation needs of countries introducing nuclear power, including Vietnam.”
