When disaster strikes, the USACE team is ready to respond 🌎

Recently, LTC Supnet, deputy contracting chief for FED, deployed in support of response efforts following Super Typhoon Sinlaku. Leveraging the contracting expertise he uses every day at FED, he helped oversee USACE mission contracting actions that enabled critical recovery operations in the affected region.

While we often focus on the projects being delivered across the Korean peninsula, our people are also called upon to support missions far beyond our district boundaries. Whether building infrastructure, strengthening partnerships, or responding to emergencies, the expertise of our workforce helps make a difference when it matters most.

We’re proud to see LTC Supnet representing FED and supporting the USACE emergency response mission.

Check out this reel from Honolulu District highlighting the effort. ⬇️

Chemist by Day, Rocker by Night: Meet Kyong-Ho Kim 🎸🎶

Meet Mr. Kim Kyong-Ho, Chemist in the Environmental Section of the Geotechnical and Environmental Engineering Branch, Engineering Division.

For many hazardous contaminants in soil, water and waste regulated by environmental standards, Kyong-Ho coordinates with contract laboratories to perform analyses, then reviews and finalizes the resulting data. He is also heavily involved in developing and updating planning documents.

“I manage the entire oversight process, which includes executing asbestos surveys, sample analysis, generating reports, and providing safe asbestos abatement services,” said Kyong-Ho, who is also a certified asbestos expert.

With his skillsets, Kyong-Ho elevated his perspective to enhance synergy in his work. It is about “understanding the context of the ‘site’ where the data originated is just as vital as the numbers themselves.”

His advice for budding chemists: “Be a chemist who connects with the field, rather than staying confined to the laboratory.”

When not in the lab or at a site, he’s engineering music. Kyong-Ho played in a rock band while attending university. To this day, he still attends his favorite band’s concerts whenever they perform in South Korea.

About three years ago, his passion for playing music returned, leading him to buy a guitar for the first time in 15 years. However, he recently gave up his practice room for his growing daughters.Nonetheless, Kyong-Ho’s will always be a true rocker at heart. ❤️ 🤘

“Even though I can’t practice as much as I’d like right now, I still find immense joy and energy in everyday life simply by immersing myself in listening to great music,” he said.

Schools. Barracks. Airfields. Emergency services facilities. 👷‍♂️🏗️

Across the peninsula, USACE Far East District delivers a wide range of projects that support readiness and quality of life for service members and their families. Each project serves a unique purpose, but all contribute to the mission in meaningful ways.

Some support training. Others strengthen operational capability. And some create spaces where military families live, learn, and grow.

So, we have to ask… what’s your favorite type of project to see us build?

Thank you, and best wishes, Lt. Col. Robert “Bobby” Howell. 👏

Last week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Far East District bid farewell to our deputy commander, Lt. Col. Robert “Bobby” Howell, as he departed for his next assignment as commander of the 1st Engineer Battalion.

During his time at FED, Howell played a key role in supporting the district’s mission of delivering infrastructure that strengthens readiness and improves quality of life for service members and families across the peninsula. His leadership, partnership, and commitment to the team made a lasting impact across the organization.

As he takes command of the 1st Engineer Battalion, we thank him for his service to FED and wish him, his family, and the Soldiers of the battalion success in this next chapter.

From all of us at FED, thank you for your leadership and dedication. Essayons!

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, we pause to remember the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. 🇺🇸

Memorial Day is more than the unofficial start of summer. It is a time to reflect on the cost of freedom and honor those who gave their lives in defense of it. Their service and sacrifice continue to inspire the mission we support every day.

At USACE Far East District, we remain committed to delivering the infrastructure that supports Soldiers, families, and readiness across the peninsula in honor of those who came before us.

This weekend, we encourage everyone to take a moment to remember, reflect, and honor.

Now Showing: The Safety Files – Personal Protective Equipment 🎬

Genre: Action. Comedy. Workplace Safety.Starring: Hard hats, safety glasses, reflective gear… and one very mission-ready Capt. Micheal Orr.

At USACE Far East District, the real secret to success on a job site is not spy gadgets or dramatic entrances. It’s wearing the right PPE. From hard hats and eye protection to proper footwear and high-visibility gear, every piece plays a role in protecting our people and preventing injuries.

Because whether you’re stepping into a construction zone or taking on your next “mission,” safety always comes first.

🍿 Watch Capt. Orr suit up in The Safety Files: Personal Protective Equipment.

Midweek appreciation post for the equipment that does the heavy lifting. 🚧

From cranes stretching into the skyline to excavators shaping the ground below, construction sites are full of moving pieces working together to make projects happen.

Behind every beam lifted and every foundation placed is a team coordinating the work to safely deliver infrastructure that supports readiness across the peninsula.

We may be biased, but it is hard not to think construction equipment looks pretty cool.

What we build goes beyond infrastructure.

Schools where students learn. Facilities where Soldiers train. Spaces where military families gather and build community.

At USACE Far East District, every project contributes to quality of life across the peninsula while helping ensure service members remain ready to accomplish the mission.

Because behind every building is a purpose, and behind every purpose are the people we serve.

Deep Foundations, Strong Structures! 🏗️

Did you know we rely on piles to create the rock-solid foundation for many of our vertical projects? These unsung heroes are a big reason our buildings stand tall and strong for generations to come.

Think of piles as the overachievers of the construction world. They transfer the weight of a structure deep through softer, compressible material until reaching solid, compact soil or rock, often 30 to 50 feet below the surface. Talk about going the extra mile… or foot.

Made of steel-reinforced concrete, piles provide the stability and durability our facilities depend on every day. And here’s a fun fact: there are likely millions of piles quietly doing their job beneath the surface across the Korean peninsula.

So, the next time you admire one of our buildings, take a moment to appreciate the hard work happening underground. Cheers to the real MVPs of construction.

Bridging the gap: Growth Post-SkillBridge Program 🪖➡️👷‍♂️

From military service to civilian success, USACE Far East District continues to support transitioning service members through the DoD SkillBridge program.

Since 2025, FED has hosted more than 20active-duty participants, providing hands-on experience across engineering, construction and non-engineering career fields.

Former intern Joel Padilla recently returned to FED as a project manager after completing the program.

“Transitions are difficult, change inevitable, but employing our veterans is a safe bet,” said Lt. Col. Robert B. Howell, deputy commander, USACE FED.
