Yesterday marked a significant step in our journey toward enhanced urban governance and development. The Adhoc Committees tasked with assessing the qualification of Luanda Township and Cheptulu-Kaimosi Township for Municipality status officially took their oath of office.

Their work will be crucial in evaluating whether these townships meet the criteria to be elevated—bringing with it improved infrastructure, service delivery, and governance for our people.

We wish the committees wisdom, integrity, and diligence as they undertake this important task for the future of our communities.

World Environment Day 2025

At Vihiga Municipality, we recognize that tackling plastic pollution is no longer optional—it's urgent.

This year, we are celebrating World Environment Day by amplifying our commitment to ending plastic pollution. Our actions today shape the environment of tomorrow.

🔹 Plastic waste is clogging our drains, polluting our rivers, and threatening biodiversity.
🔹 We are investing in sustainable waste management, promoting alternatives to single-use plastics, and encouraging community-led environmental stewardship.

Let’s unite in our shared responsibility to build a plastic-free future for Vihiga and beyond.

🗣️ Take action. Be the change. Let’s together.

A Cleaner, Greener Vihiga!

We’re excited to share a major step toward healthier communities and a cleaner environment in Vihiga Municipality!

To improve how we manage human waste and protect our water sources, we’ve constructed a biodigester supported by a four-chamber constructed wetland. This natural system treats faecal waste without relying on chemicals or expensive energy. Instead, it uses natural processes—just like a mini forest and swamp working together—to clean wastewater.

What this means for our people:

- Safer sanitation and cleaner surroundings
- Reduced pollution of rivers and streams
- Treated water that can be used to grow flowers and trees
- A system that’s affordable and easy to maintain

We thank our dedicated team, the community, and our partners for making this possible. Together, we’re making Vihiga a model for green and sustainable urban living!

Vihiga Municipality proudly took part in the Kakamega SWM Sensitization Drive held on April 29–30, 2025, in Kakamega Town. Represented by Mr. John Okwaro, Head of the Environment Department, the Municipality joined other key stakeholders across Western Kenya in championing sustainable waste management practices.

This impactful two-day hybrid event featured interactive workshops, panel discussions, and knowledge-sharing sessions covering critical themes such as the Sustainable Waste Management Act (2022), EPR Regulations (2024), and the Consumer-Led Transformation Initiative. The forum offered valuable insights and practical tools for strengthening our local waste management systems and transitioning toward a circular economy.

We remain committed to advancing environmental sustainability in Vihiga and beyond.
