Today, Kenya marks 16 years since the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.
The State Department for Justice, Human Rights and Constitutional Affairs joined H.E. President William Ruto and Distinguished guests at the national commemoration held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre.
Delivering the reflections of the people, Principal Secretary Hon. Judith Pareno reflected on Kenya’s constitutional journey, celebrating the progress made while emphasizing the work that remains to fully realize the promise of the Constitution.
Over the past 16 years, Kenya has made significant strides through devolution, stronger protection of human rights, improved access to justice, public participation, gender equality, inclusion, accountability and the rule of law.
However, constitutional implementation remains a continuing journey. The true measure of the Constitution is whether its promise is felt in the daily lives of Kenyan in access to justice, quality public services, protection of rights, meaningful participation and accountable governance.
The State Department reaffirmed its commitment to advancing constitutional implementation, promoting human rights, strengthening access to justice, supporting governance reforms and ensuring that the Constitution is lived, respected and implemented in practice.
Kenya belongs to all of us. The responsibility to protect and uphold the Constitution belongs to all of us.
