WHAT IS KALPOP MUSIC
Kalpop is a music genre that originated in the Klassikan royal communities in Kenya during the mid-1990s. It blends Klassikan, African, multicultural, and popular music elements, characterized by swing, blue notes, complex chords, call-and-response vocals, polyrhythms, and improvisation. Influenced by genres like Zouk, Reggae, Afrobeats, rock and roll, chakacha, rhumba, biguine, Afrofusion, and blues, it emerged as a spiritual and vibrant form of expression with a focus on "swing" and individuality in phrasing. Pioneered by Kenyan artist, producer, author and entrepreneur DON SANTO, also known as the "King of Kalpop," the genre’s first recorded song was Migingo, and its first album, Alpha, was released in 2012. Kalpop has since spread to the United States and the United Kingdom, evolving into subgenres like Kalpop Gospel and Kalpop Dance, and is recognized for its commercial yet culturally rooted appeal.
HISTORY OF KALPOP MUSIC
Kalpop music originated in the mid-1990s within the Klassikan royal communities in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, particularly among the urban people in regions like Nairobi, Kisumu, Arusha, Kampala, and Mombasa. It emerged as a fusion of Klassikan musical traditions with African, multicultural, and popular music influences, including Zouk, Reggae, Afrobeats, rock and roll, chakacha, rhumba, biguine, Afrofusion, and blues. The genre was pioneered by Kenyan artist and producer (Blame It On Don) DON SANTO, often called the "Don of Dons" or simply the "Badman Killa" who sought to create a vibrant, spiritual sound that emphasized "swing," improvisation, blue notes, complex chords, call-and-response vocals, and polyrhythms.
The term "Kalpop" derives from "Klassikan" and "popular," reflecting its roots in cultural heritage and its appeal to mainstream audiences. The first recorded Kalpop song was Migingo, released by DON SANTO featuring El Klassik Band, followed by the genre’s debut album, Alpha, in 2012. These works established Kalpop as a distinct genre, blending traditional African rhythms with modern production techniques and global influences.
Throughout the 2000s, Kalpop grew in popularity in Kenya, particularly in urban centers, as it resonated with younger audiences seeking music that was both culturally significant and commercially viable. Its lyrical themes often addressed social issues, spirituality, love, and identity, making it a versatile medium for expression. By the 2010s, Kalpop began to spread beyond Kenya, gaining traction in the United States and the United Kingdom, largely through the diaspora and digital platforms.
The genre evolved to include subgenres like Kalpop Gospel, which incorporates Christian themes, and Kalpop Dance, tailored for upbeat, danceable rhythms. Artists like DON SANTO, EL Klassik Band, J Wizo, Stringa, and Blessed Paul continued to innovate, collaborating with producers and musicians from diverse genres to expand Kalpop’s sound. Its growth was further fueled by live performances, music festivals, and social media, which helped it reach global audiences.
By 2025, Kalpop has become a recognized genre in African music circles, celebrated for its unique blend of tradition and modernity. While DON SANTO remains its most prominent figure, new artists have emerged, contributing to its ongoing evolution and global influence.
SUBGENRES OF KALPOP MUSIC

Based on available information, the primary subgenres of Kalpop are:
Kalpop Gospel: This subgenre integrates Christian themes and spiritual messages into the Kalpop framework. It retains the genre’s signature improvisation, call-and-response vocals, and vibrant rhythms but focuses on worship and faith-based lyrics, appealing to religious audiences, particularly within Kenyan and diaspora communities. Artists who play Kalpop Gospel include Blessed Paul, El Klassik Band, Stringa, Victorvich, DON SANTO, among others.
Kalpop Dance: Characterized by upbeat, energetic rhythms, this subgenre is designed for dance floors and social gatherings. It emphasizes catchy beats and lively instrumentation, often incorporating modern production techniques and influences from genres like Afrobeats and Reggae to enhance its danceable appeal.
These subgenres reflect Kalpop’s adaptability, allowing it to cater to diverse audiences while preserving its cultural roots and musical identity as pioneered by artists like DON SANTO. Other artists include Stringa, GKS9, El Klassik Band, among others.
Kaldrop: This is a fusion of Kalpop with Hip Hop/Rap and other sounds, maintaining the Klassikan swagger. J WIzo, Ruthless, and DON SANTO are among the artists who have done Kaldrop (a variation of Kalpop) music.
