🤝 Building A Stronger Future for Maternal, Reproductive & NCD Care in Kenya & Tanzania.

Between 1st and 7th September 2026, four Stakeholders Meetings were held in Kilifi, Dodoma, Meru, and Zanzibar to discuss the upcoming Italian Cooperation initiative: “Donna-Link” 🇰🇪 🇹🇿.

Building on the results of the regional health programme concluded in early 2026, “Donna-Link” aims to create integrated networks for , reproductive, and NCD care across the two countries.

💡 During the meetings, a team from AICS Nairobi together with our technical partner convened with a diverse group of local experts, including representatives of Ministries of Health & local health authorities, doctors, nurses, community health workers, universities, research centres, and CSOs active in the targeted areas.

🎯 The main objective? To listen first. By gathering insights directly from grassroots actors and local stakeholders, we ensure that Donna-Link’s intervention strategies are:
✅ Relevant to local realities
✅ Tailored to the specific needs of local populations
✅ Coherent with national and local priorities

This participatory approach is key to contextualize national data with on-the-ground evidence, identify gaps in service delivery and design programs that truly fit the communities they serve.

IASA, the first non-state Special School for Advanced Studies within the Italian university system, has opened applications for its PhD Programme in “Advanced Sciences for Agrifood Systems”.

Established by Italian legislation to contribute to the objectives of the Mattei Plan in the field of higher education and to help bridge the gap between traditional agriculture and modern technologies, IASA represents a national infrastructure supporting scientific partnerships between Italy and African countries.

🌍 The call provides for at least 8 reserved positions for candidates who hold the citizenship of an African country, with a separate ranking and fully funded scholarships.

Selected candidates will benefit from:

🎓 a scholarship
🏠 free accommodation and meals
💶 no participation or enrolment fees

The PhD programme will be conducted entirely in English.

From data to action: building a more resilient future for Baringo’s communities and ecosystems🌱

Since 2010, increasingly intense rainfall and rising water levels in Lake Baringo and the connected Lake Bogoria have caused widespread flooding. These climate-related changes have submerged infrastructure and farmland, damaged ecosystems and biodiversity, disrupted livelihoods and repeatedly displaced approximately 286,000 people.

To help address these challenges, Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo and GIZ are implementing the Programme “Strengthening Climate Resilience in the Lake Baringo Watershed,” co-funded by the European Union in Kenya and the German Cooperation and realized in coordination with the Baringo County Government. The programme aims to strengthen the capacity of communities, institutions, and ecosystems to anticipate, withstand and adapt to the growing impacts of climate change.

📊 To ensure that future interventions respond to local needs and priorities, AICS commissioned a comprehensive socio-economic baseline survey examining:

🔹 Environmental change, natural resources and settlements
🔹 Livelihoods, access to services, gender and youth
🔹 Climate shocks, vulnerability and resilience
🔹 Governance and institutional dynamics
🔹 Infrastructure conditions and investment priorities

📍 In August, a workshop was held in Kabarnet to present and validate the survey findings and recommendations to the relevant stakeholders, in particular the representatives of the communities affected by the situation, who validated them.

The event brought together representatives of the County and National Governments, the European Union, regulatory agencies, academic institutions, and community-based organisations.

Their feedback will help guide AICS and GIZ - under the supervision of the Baringo County Government - in planning targeted medium- and long-term investments that strengthen climate resilience, protect ecosystems and support sustainable livelihoods across the Lake Baringo watershed.

According to a 2025 study by the National Bureau of Statistics, 55.3% of children have experienced multidimensional poverty — facing multiple barriers to accessing essential services, including healthcare, education, protection, water and sanitation. 📊Yet, we know that access to these services is essential to ensuring that every child can grow up healthy and thrive. 🌱

This week, Ambasciata d'Italia a Nairobi and Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo joined national and county institutions and project partners to launch “Nurturing the Future”, a three-year initiative funded by the Italian Cooperation. 🇮🇹 🇰🇪

The project is supporting Nairobi City County in strengthening integrated health services, inclusive early childhood education and parenting support for children aged 0–5, their mothers, families and caregivers, with special attention to children with disabilities. 👶🏾♿️🏥📚

Led by Comune di Rimini in partnership with Nairobi City County Government, AUSL Romagna, EducAid, Cittadinanza Ets, Associazione Comunità Papa Giovanni XXIII, The Action Foundation and Community Pope John XXIII, the project brings together two local governments, alongside public institutions and civil-society organisations from Italy and Kenya. 🤝

At the heart of the initiative are partnerships, local ownership and long-term cooperation — bringing together the broader Italian system and Kenyan partners to strengthen essential services and advance children’s rights. Nurturing the future means investing today in children, mothers, families and the institutions that protect and promote the enjoyment of their rights. 💙

🪡Beads of Resilience: Kenyan women crafting stories of peace and empowerment
Last week, a team from AICS Nairobi & travelled through Laikipia and Nakuru counties to visit the women’s cooperatives supported by the initiative “Designing the Future — a sustainable and inclusive fashion ecosystem project for Kenya” a 5€ M initiative funded by the Italian Cooperation, and part of Tujikuze Initiative social enterprise.
In📍 Nakuru — the Ushindi Gilgil Women’s Group turned survival into strength. Seeking refuge from Kenya’s 2008 post-electoral violence, a small group of women came together determined to rise out of poverty, harnessing their beading, sewing and artistic skills passed on through generations. As of today, Ushindi has trained over 100 women, providing them with independence, sustainable livelihoods & security in an environment with limited opportunities.
In📍 Laikipia — SATUBO tells a story of unity over division. Founded in 2009 by women from the Samburu, Turkana, and Borana communities — ethnic groups with a long history of conflict — SATUBO proves that peace pays more than war ever could. With EFI’s support, they’ve registered as a company, built a showroom and a school, and created economic power through the art of beading, becoming a beacon of hope for their communities. ✨
As part of the journey, the team also visited , a social enterprise part of Northern Rangelands Trust which - in collaboration with Tujikuze - works with 1,200 women across 9 conservancies in northern Kenya, blending beadwork with biodiversity conservation — because empowering women and protecting the land go hand in hand. 🌿
The visit was a chance to see the project’s progress firsthand, and to understand what still needs to be done to keep these cooperatives connected to national and international markets.

🎓 Certificates awarded! 🎓
Yesterday, 53 participants successfully completed the first module of the East Africa Statistical Training Centre & Politecnico di Torino Summer School 2026, held in Dar es Salaam 🇹🇿 and focused on multivariate data analysis & applied data mining in research.
The first module, led by Prof. Stefano Bonnini, using a hybrid approach (online and in presence) is the first of four to be realized during the Summer School, and has been delivered under the framework of the initiative _”Strengthening the EASTC’s educational offer in statistics to benefit Sub-Saharan African countries”— a 300.000 EUR three-year initiative funded by the Italian Cooperation aimed at strengthening the educational offer for the 18 countries members of EASTC.
Building on a long-standing partnerships and previous interventions which have supported capacity building at EASTC, this initiative brings in POLITO’s Department of Mathematical Sciences (DISMA) to cover emerging topics such as statistics for extreme events and for data science, biostatistics, spatial data analysis, national accounts, and small area estimation.

On Friday, 24 July, AICS Nairobi convened a coordination meeting with the Italian CSO implementing Italian cooperation €6.4 million humanitarian programme in Somalia.🇸🇴
Chaired by AICS Head of Office Fabio Minniti and attended by the First Secretary of the Embassy of Italy in Mogadishu, Mirko Di Benedetto, the meeting was the first of its kind. It provided a valuable platform to exchange updates on ongoing interventions and strengthen coordination across key priority areas, including:
🌱Climate resilience and food security�💧Access to WASH and essential services�🩺Maternal and neonatal health�🤲Protection of people in situations of vulnerability�🫂Prevention and response to GBV
Participants also explored ways to enhance alignment and collaboration across the AICS humanitarian programme in Somalia, with the aim of delivering more effective and coordinated assistance in collaboration with local CSOs and international partners.
The meeting reaffirmed AICS’ commitment to fostering complementarity among actors responding to Somalia’s growing humanitarian needs.
Greater synergy means greater impact on the ground.✨

On we reaffirm that coordination is the key to protection.
This week, under the Italian-funded EmPoWeReD II project & in collaboration with the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Secretariat of Tanzania’s Ministry of Home Affairs, two-day inter-institutional meetings wrapped up across 15 regions of mainland Tanzania and 2 regions of Zanzibar, bringing together the people on the front lines of the fight against human trafficking:
👮 Regional Police Commanders & Police Gender Desks ⚖️ National Prosecuting Service, judges & magistrates 🤝 Regional social workers, community development officers & labour officers.
🎯The goal: build a shared understanding of human trafficking and strengthen coordination between relevant institutions, with a particular focus on protecting minor domestic workers, one of the groups most vulnerable to trafficking & exploitation in Tanzania.
✅The outcome: Every region now has its own inter-institutional working group on human trafficking & Whatsapp group for real-time coordination and information-sharing.
Working in 24 of Tanzania’s 31 regions, EmPoWeReD II supports vocational training and recognition of domestic workers’ rights, prevents child and labour in the domestic work sector, while promoting safe and the implementation of the national & international conventions.
Protection starts with people who talk to each other. 🤝

👜 Meet Davis, Zipporah and Virginiah, three young Kenyan leather designers who, through the Ethical Fashion Initiative of the International Trade Centre (ITC), funded in Kenya by the Italian Cooperation 🇮🇹🤝🇰🇪, were awarded an internship with leading Italian leather manufacturers.

✂️ Back in Kenya, they are not only bringing home new technical skills and inspiration—they are helping strengthen the country's leather industry by sharing their knowledge with other young people and contributing to the growth of a more competitive, sustainable and inclusive sector. 🌱📈
