RCGW continues to play a key role in advancing knowledge and capacity building in the region through its participation in the + Hydrogeology Training currently taking place in Lodwar Town, Turkana County from 26th May to 3rd June, 2026. The Centre is represented by Geol. Philip Emekwi, while the RCGW CEO, Geol. Patrick Murunga, is serving as one of the facilitators alongside renowned Hydrochemistry experts, Prof. Rasmus Jakobsen ( ) and Prof. Jasper Griffioen ( University, The Netherlands). The training is organized under the -African Support to Geological Sciences and Technology programme ( + WP7). It brings together geoscientists from more than 10 African countries to enhance their skills in groundwater quality management, hydrochemistry, and environmental geoscience through knowledge exchange and hands-on field learning.
The course offers advanced training on important hydrogeological and geochemical processes that govern the quality of groundwater such as carbonate chemistry, oxidation-reduction, mineral solubility, contamination of groundwater, microbial water quality and geochemical modeling. Key environmental and public health problems like fluoride in the East African Rift Valley, acid mine water, and pathogenic pollution related to problems are also explored in the course of the training. The training is delivered through lectures, tutorials and practical sessions to provide the participants with quantitative and field skills needed for the effective monitoring and management of groundwater.
This training is a critical step to better strengthen the management of groundwater resources and environmental sustainability in Africa. The participants are expected to adopt the acquired knowledge and skills for research, groundwater evaluation, environmental management, and solving water quality issues in their respective countries and contribute to sustainable development of groundwater resources.
