On 11th June 2026, the Regional Centre on Groundwater Resources (RCGW) donated a water tank and successfully conducted a tree-planting exercise at High School in Meru County . Tree planting is a key Nature-based Solution ( ) that supports sustainability by enhancing recharge, reducing soil erosion, improving water infiltration, and strengthening climate resilience.

The event was led by RCGW Board Chairperson Dr. Stephen Maore, Director Stellah Karimi, and CEO Geol. Patrick Murunga. Also in attendance were Water Police Commandant Samuel Olerasha and Njia High School Principal Alex Karuma.

The initiative underscores the importance of partnerships in promoting environmental conservation and sustainable water resource management.

Empowering Meru County through Groundwater Awareness

The Regional Centre on Groundwater Resources (RCGW) in line with its mandate on promoting and sharing knowledge on groundwater related issues, conducted Groundwater Awareness Forum on 10th June, 2016 in town, Meru County

As climate variability and human activities continues to impact surface water reliability, understanding, and protecting our invisible underground resources has never been more critical. This public awareness was set to discuss exploration and development technologies to promote sustainable access to groundwater for socio economic development in Meru County as a means to safeguard our aquifers for future generations.

The forum also provided an opportunity for the Centre to share with the public about its services. Several participants attended the forum, including local stakeholders, community leaders, and water practitioners i.e Subcounty AP Commander Dyna K. Mugambi, Water Police Commandant Samuel Olerasha, Senior Chief John T. Muthine among other Area chiefs, the Centre lead by Board Chairperson Dr. Stephen Maore, Dir. Stellah Karimi, and CEO Geol. Patrick Murunga.

RCGW continues to play a key role in advancing knowledge and capacity building in the region through its participation in the + Hydrogeology Training currently taking place in Lodwar Town, Turkana County from 26th May to 3rd June, 2026. The Centre is represented by Geol. Philip Emekwi, while the RCGW CEO, Geol. Patrick Murunga, is serving as one of the facilitators alongside renowned Hydrochemistry experts, Prof. Rasmus Jakobsen ( ) and Prof. Jasper Griffioen ( University, The Netherlands). The training is organized under the -African Support to Geological Sciences and Technology programme ( + WP7). It brings together geoscientists from more than 10 African countries to enhance their skills in groundwater quality management, hydrochemistry, and environmental geoscience through knowledge exchange and hands-on field learning.

The course offers advanced training on important hydrogeological and geochemical processes that govern the quality of groundwater such as carbonate chemistry, oxidation-reduction, mineral solubility, contamination of groundwater, microbial water quality and geochemical modeling. Key environmental and public health problems like fluoride in the East African Rift Valley, acid mine water, and pathogenic pollution related to problems are also explored in the course of the training. The training is delivered through lectures, tutorials and practical sessions to provide the participants with quantitative and field skills needed for the effective monitoring and management of groundwater.

This training is a critical step to better strengthen the management of groundwater resources and environmental sustainability in Africa. The participants are expected to adopt the acquired knowledge and skills for research, groundwater evaluation, environmental management, and solving water quality issues in their respective countries and contribute to sustainable development of groundwater resources.

The Centre has successfully installed a GNIP station on Amu Island at the Shela dunes in Lamu County . The station is located within the premises of the Lamu Water and Sewerage Company (LAWASCO).

With this addition, the total number of GNIP stations across the country now stands at 12, marking a significant achievement toward the Centre’s performance contract (PC) target for the current financial year.

While RCGW has now established 12 GNIP stations nationwide, the target is to expand the network to 20 stations across the country. Achieving this milestone will provide a stronger national coverage and a more robust reference framework for supporting hydrological and studies.

RCGW technical teams are currently undertaking an integrated ground water assessment in the Hills aimed at enhancing understanding of systems, surface water dynamics, geology, and water quality within the region.

The multidisciplinary exercise brings together experts from the: Hydrology Team, Water Quality Team and Geology Team.
•The Hydrology Team is conducting streamflow measurements.
•The Water Quality Team is carrying out insitu water testing and sampling. The water samples will be tested further in our labs.
•The Geology Team is undertaking geological mapping and characterization of rock formations that influence groundwater occurrence, recharge, and storage within the Chyulu Hills ecosystem.

The integrated assessment will generate critical scientific data to support sustainable groundwater development, , and evidence-based decision-making.
