GOVERNOR ACHANI LAUNCHES SECOND PHASE OF SIMANYA DAM PROJECT

Kwale County Governor H.E. Fatuma Achani has launched the second phase of the Simanya Dam Project in Kubo South Ward, Matuga Sub county, reaffirming her administration’s commitment to expanding access to clean and safe water across the county.

The project is being implemented through the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Programme under the Department of Lands, Environment and Natural Resources, headed by CECM Saumu Beja, in partnership with the County Government of Kwale and with funding support from the World Bank.

The second phase of the project will include fencing of the water facility, installation of pumps and solar-powered systems, construction of a 500-metre pipeline, establishment of a community water point, installation of an ultra-filtration unit for water treatment, and construction of animal watering troughs.

Speaking during the launch, Governor Achani said her government remains focused on investing in sustainable water infrastructure to improve livelihoods, strengthen climate resilience, and support economic activities in water-scarce areas.

“We are committed to ensuring that every resident has access to clean and safe water. Through strategic investments in dams, boreholes and water distribution systems, we are transforming lives and enhancing food security across the county,” said Governor Achani.

The Governor noted that her administration has already drilled more than 100 boreholes in Matuga and Msambweni sub-counties and constructed over 70 small and medium-sized dams in Kinango and Lunga Lunga, significantly improving water access for thousands of residents.

CECM Saumu Beja, highlighted the county's ongoing efforts to address perennial water shortages through climate-smart investments, including dam construction and expansion of water infrastructure to support domestic use, irrigation and livestock production and noted that this initiative has improved access to water and is contributing to increased agricultural productivity and reducing communities’ dependence on relief food.

Kubo South MCA Hon. Andrew Mulei commended the county government for prioritizing water development projects and urged residents to protect and maintain the infrastructure to ensure long-term benefits for future generations.

Residents welcomed the project, expressing optimism that it will ease the burden of water scarcity and improve living conditions in the area.

DEPUTY GOVERNOR CHIREMA KOMBO LAUNCHES CONSTRUCTION OF NJALO WATER PAN IN PUMA WARD

Kwale County Deputy Governor H.E Chirema Kombo has officially launched the construction of the Njalo Water Pan in Njalo Village, Puma Ward, Kinango Sub-county, in a major boost to water access and climate resilience for local communities.

The project, being implemented under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) programme through the Department of Lands, Environment and Natural Resources, is expected to benefit more than 250 households.

The water pan will be equipped with water towers, livestock watering troughs, and water purification facilities to ensure access to safe and clean water for both domestic use and livestock.

The initiative is aimed at addressing the persistent challenge of water scarcity in the area while strengthening livelihoods through improved water availability for household consumption, livestock production, and small-scale irrigation farming.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Deputy Governor Chirema said the project demonstrates the County Government's commitment to improving the lives of residents through sustainable and climate-smart investments.

"This project will help residents access water for domestic use while also supporting irrigation activities and livestock production. It is one of the many initiatives the county government is undertaking to improve livelihoods and enhance resilience against the effects of climate change," said Chirema.

Chirema further urged residents to continue supporting Governor Fatuma Achani's administration, noting that the county government remains focused on delivering transformative development projects across all wards.

Puma Ward MCA Hon. Dawa Ngome lauded Governor Achani for prioritizing water projects that directly address the needs of communities in drought-prone areas.

"I commend Governor Fatuma Achani for fulfilling her promise to improve access to water. We will continue working together to bring more development projects to Puma Ward and improve the welfare of our people," said Dawa.

Residents welcomed the project, describing it as a long-awaited solution to water shortages that have affected households and livestock for years.

Speaking on behalf of the community, Mr. Lemle Ongoi expressed gratitude to the County Government for bringing the project to Njalo. "We are grateful to the Kwale County Government for bringing this much-needed water project to our community. It will significantly reduce the burden of searching for water and improve our livelihoods," said Ongoi.

Once completed, the Njalo Water Pan is expected to provide a reliable water source throughout the year, reducing the distance residents travel in search of water, improving livestock health and productivity, supporting agricultural activities, and enhancing food security in the area.

Also present during the launch were Political Advisor Mshenga Ruga, Director for Monitoring and Evaluation Ronald Chakaya, Michael Mingi, Climate Change Unit officers, county officials, and other local leaders.

Residents of Tsimba-Golini Ward in Matuga Sub-county are set to benefit from improved access to water following the launch of the Banga Dam construction project by Kwale County Governor H.E Fatuma Achani.

The project, which is being implemented under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) programme through the Department of Lands, Environment and Natural Resources headed by CECM Saumu Beja, is funded by the World Bank in partnership with the County Government of Kwale.

Once completed, the dam is expected to serve more than 200 households in Lunguma A and B, Banga and Nzora villages, providing a sustainable water source for domestic use, livestock and agricultural production.

The project includes the construction of a water tower, installation of a solar-powered pumping system, perimeter fencing, community water points, livestock watering troughs and a micro-irrigation system to support community farming initiatives.

For years, residents of the area have grappled with water scarcity, forcing families, particularly women and children, to walk long distances in search of water. Livestock farmers have also endured significant challenges during prolonged dry seasons due to limited access to reliable watering points.

Speaking during the launch, Governor Achani said the county government remains committed to investing in climate-resilient infrastructure that improves livelihoods while strengthening communities against the impacts of climate change.

“This dam will transform lives by ensuring a reliable water supply for households, livestock and farming activities. Access to water is key to improving food security, economic opportunities and the overall well-being of our people. We remain committed to ensuring every resident of Kwale has access to clean and safe water,” said Governor Achani.

The governor noted that her administration has made significant investments in water infrastructure across the county, including the drilling of over 100 boreholes in Matuga and Msambweni sub-counties and the construction of more than 70 small and medium-sized dams in Kinango and Lunga Lunga sub-counties.

The Banga Dam project marks the second FLLoCA intervention in Tsimba-Golini Ward. During the programme's first phase, the county government successfully implemented a sustainable land rehabilitation project and carried out extensive tree-planting activities at Tsimba Secondary School and Magombani Primary School as part of efforts to restore degraded landscapes and enhance environmental conservation.

CECM for Lands, Environment and Natural Resources Saumu Beja said FLLoCA projects are designed to empower communities through locally identified climate adaptation solutions that address pressing environmental and socio-economic challenges.

Tsimba-Golini MCA Hon. Mwachuo Mwaboza welcomed the project, describing it as a game-changer for residents who have long struggled with unreliable water sources.

Local residents also expressed their appreciation to the county government and development partners for prioritizing the area.

Speaking on behalf of the community, Kuwaga Mwaboma said the project would bring lasting relief to families and significantly improve livestock production and household livelihoods.

“For many years, women have walked nearly 10 kilometres in search of water. This project gives us hope and will greatly improve the lives of our families and future generations,” he said.

The launch was attended by Water CECM Hemed Mwabudzo, Tourism CECM Michael Mutua, Agriculture CECM Roman Shera, Chief Officer for Environment Neema Suya, Political Advisor Mshenga Ruga, Economic Advisor Anthony Yama, Climate Change Unit officers and other county and national government officials.

Kwale County Governor H.E Fatuma Achani and Deputy Governor H.E Chirema Kombo have officially launched the construction of the Nzephu Dam in Ndavaya Ward, Kinango Sub-County, marking another major milestone in the county's efforts to enhance water security and build climate-resilient communities.

The project, being implemented under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Programme, falls under the Department of Lands, Environment, Natural Resources and Urban Planning, headed by CECM Saumu Beja. It is among several climate adaptation projects currently being rolled out across the county to address the effects of climate change while improving livelihoods.

Once completed, the dam will benefit more than 250 households from Nzephu and Kambingu villages by providing reliable access to water for domestic use, livestock and agricultural activities.

The project will also feature a water tower, a solar-powered pumping system, perimeter fencing, water distribution points and livestock watering troughs.

The Nzephu Dam is the second FLLoCA-supported water project to be implemented in Ndavaya Ward.

During the first phase, the county government constructed Mabogi water pan in Ndauni village that continues to serve residents, livestock keepers and farmers through irrigation, significantly improving water availability in the area.

Speaking during the launch, Governor Achani reaffirmed her administration's commitment to ensuring that every resident has access to clean and safe water.

"We are doing everything possible to ensure that our people have reliable access to water. This project will not only provide water for household use but will also support farming and livestock keeping, contributing to food security and increased household incomes,"said Governor Achani.

The governor noted that water remains a key pillar in the county's development agenda, adding that investments in water infrastructure are essential in mitigating the impacts of prolonged droughts and erratic weather patterns.

Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo described the project as a strategic investment in the future of the community, saying it demonstrates the county government's dedication to sustainable development and climate adaptation.

"By increasing water availability, we are creating opportunities for economic growth, improved agricultural productivity and a better quality of life for residents. This is how we build resilient communities that can withstand climate-related challenges," he said.

The launch highlighted the growing impact of the FLLoCA Programme across Kwale County, where several community-driven projects are being implemented to strengthen climate resilience, improve natural resource management and support sustainable livelihoods.

Ndavaya ward MCA Hon. Beja Mwauchi commended the county government for prioritizing the ward's water needs and urged residents to take ownership of the project to ensure its long-term sustainability and value for money.

Residents welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that it would address long-standing water shortages that have affected families, livestock production and farming activities.

One of the beneficiaries, Mlanda Mwakupha, said the project would transform lives in the area. "Water scarcity has been a major challenge for our community. Many families spend hours searching for water, affecting children's school attendance and daily economic activities. This project gives us hope for a better future," she said.

*KWALE PARTNERS WITH REREC TO ENHANCE BOREHOLE PROJECTS IN SHIMBA HILLS*

In collaboration with the County Government of Kwale and the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), 7 borehole sites in Shimba Hills, Matuga Sub-County have been officially handed over for enhancement works.

The handover of the boreholes in Kidiani, Mwanamkuu, Haraka, Mwagodzo, Mabafweni, Lukore and Maphombe was officiated by Chief Officer for Public Service and Administration, Mdm. Mebakari Mwatabu, on behalf of Governor H.E. Fatuma Achani.
The initiative forms part of a broader programme that was launched by the governor HE. Fatuma Achani, yesterday, will see a total of 28 boreholes upgraded through solarization, including the installation of water towers, generator houses, and fencing.

The county has so far drilled over 100 boreholes and constructed 70 water pans across the sub-counties of Matuga, Msambweni, Samburu, Kinango, and Lungalunga.

GOVERNOR ACHANI LAUNCHES SOLARIZATION OF 28 BOREHOLES IN TSIMBA GOLINI

Kwale County Governor H.E Fatuma Achani has officially launched the solarization of 28 boreholes across the county in a bid to improve access to clean and safe water.

The project was unveiled at Jeza Village in Tsimba Golini Ward, Matuga Sub-County, and is part of the county government’s broader strategy to strengthen water infrastructure and promote sustainable resource use.

Implemented through a partnership between the Kwale County Government and the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), the initiative seeks to harness solar energy to power boreholes, reducing operational costs while ensuring reliable water supply.

Speaking during the launch, Governor Achani highlighted her administration’s progress in the water sector, noting that over 100 boreholes have been drilled and 70 water pans constructed across Matuga, Msambweni, Samburu, Kinango, and Lungalunga sub-counties.

“Our goal is to ensure every household in Kwale County has access to clean and reliable water. These solar-powered boreholes will not only reduce the cost of water production but also promote sustainable development through the use of renewable energy,” she said.

A representative from REREC, Samuel Olela, reaffirmed the corporation’s commitment to partnering with county governments to expand access to water and energy infrastructure.

“As REREC, we will continue working closely with counties to implement projects that improve livelihoods. Access to water and clean energy is key to socio-economic development,” he said.

Residents welcomed the initiative, with Jeza Village Chairman Omar Dosho expressing optimism that the project will ease the burden of accessing water.

“For a long time, we have struggled to find clean water, often walking long distances. This project will transform our lives by bringing water closer to our homes,” he said.

The solarization project falls under the Department of Environment, Natural Resources and Urban Planning, led by CEC Member Saumu Beja, and underscores the county’s commitment to sustainable development through renewable energy solutions.

GOVERNOR ACHANI SWEARS IN DIANI AND KWALE MUNICIPALITY BOARDS, URGES FOCUS ON SERVICE DELIVERY

Kwale Governor H.E. Fatuma Achani has presided over the swearing-in of newly appointed board members for the Diani and Kwale Municipalities, reaffirming the county government’s commitment to strengthening urban management, environmental sustainability and efficient service delivery.

The ceremony, held at the Kwale County Headquarters, brought together county officials from the Department of Environment, Natural Resources and Urban Planning, led by CECM Saumu Mahaja, alongside municipal managers and legal officers.

Speaking during the event, Governor Achani challenged the newly sworn-in board members and municipal managers to prioritize timely response to public concerns and improve the quality of services offered to residents.

She emphasized that effective municipal governance should be people-centered and responsive.

“We cannot have our people complain for a month or two about an issue that can be resolved immediately. Let us remain committed to supporting our people,” said Governor Achani.

The Governor further called for strong collaboration between municipal boards and county departments, noting that teamwork is essential in achieving sustainable urban development and efficient service delivery.

“When you run your own show, you will not manage effectively. Teamwork is what will enable you to achieve more,” Achani added.

Governor Achani also urged the board members to uphold integrity, transparency and accountability in the ex*****on of their duties.

The boards will serve a three-year term, during which they will provide policy oversight, guide strategic planning and support municipal management in delivering services to residents.

Municipalities in Kwale are mandated to manage urban services and infrastructure within their jurisdictions. Their core functions include: Urban planning, design and land use management, promotion of decent and affordable housing, solid waste management and sanitation services, construction and maintenance of urban roads, drainage systems and walkways, development of parks, green spaces and recreational areas, installation and maintenance of street lighting and traffic management systems, management of bus stations, taxi stands, markets and other public amenities.

Through these responsibilities, the municipalities play a critical role in enhancing environmental management, improving urban infrastructure and supporting economic growth across Kwale County.

The swearing-in ceremony was also attended by County Attorney Salim Gombeni, County Solicitor Kisiwa Koja, Kwale Municipal Manager Mwanawani Sheti, and Diani Municipal Acting Manager Hassan Mwadzugwe, among other county officials.

The event falls under the Department of Environment, Natural Resources and Urban Planning, headed by CECM Saumu Mahaja, which oversees urban planning, environmental management and municipal development within Kwale County.

GOVERNOR ACHANI PRESIDES OVER GROUNDBREAKING OF CABRO PAVING OF MASJID MUADH – KWALE MORTUARY ROAD

Kwale County Governor H.E Fatuma Achani has presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the cabro paving of the Masjid Muadh – Kwale Mortuary Road in Kwale Town, Matuga Sub-County.

The project, under Kwale Municipality, aims to improve urban infrastructure and stimulate economic growth.

Speaking during the event, Governor Achani said the project reflects her administration’s commitment to enhancing road networks within municipalities and trading centres across Kwale County.

“As a government, we are doing everything to ensure our roads are passable not only during the sunny season but also during the rainy season,” she noted.

She urged the contractor to engage registered limited companies owned by women, youth, and persons living with disabilities in undertaking the project.

The county government is also planning complementary projects, including the installation of street lighting along the road once resources are available.

Residents, led by Kijuti Dodo, thanked the county government for the project, noting that it will boost business by attracting more customers and easing the transportation of goods to and from the market.

“This road carries people during very sensitive moments. Families have struggled to transport their loved ones because of its poor condition. We are grateful that the county government has listened to our cry,” he added.

Apart from Kwale, the county government is also improving infrastructure in Kinango, Diani and Lungalunga municipalities.
