Governor Mutai leads county delegation to Kabianga Ward for a development tour

Kabianga Ward has today played host to a high powered delegation of senior county officials led by Kericho Governor H.E Dr Erick Mutai for a development tour of the area.

The delegation began by commissioning the new Chepsagogo Tea Buying Centre, a modern facility expected to greatly improve tea handling and storage standards, enhance efficiency, and ultimately increase returns for hardworking tea farmers in the area.

Governor Mutai noted that the county government remains committed to boosting the quality of green leaf produced by tea farmers through the adoption of modern storage facilities in tea buying centres across the county.

The Chepsagogo Tea Buying Centre is among the over 150 tea buying centres that the county government has constructed and renovated over the past three years as part of efforts aimed at strengthening the tea sector and improving the livelihoods of farmers.

The delegation later proceeded to Kiptome village where Governor Mutai commissioned the new Chemamul Dairy Cooperative building together with a modern feed mixer to support dairy farmers and boost milk production in the area.

Speaking during the commissioning,Governor Mutai noted that Kericho County is firmly on course to becoming among Kenya’s top milk producing counties through sustained investment in dairy production and the strengthening of dairy cooperatives.

The Chemamul Dairy Cooperative is now fully operational following the county government’s earlier investment in a milk cooler. The new infrastructure is expected to enhance milk handling, improve feed quality, and increase earnings for farmers while strengthening the dairy value chain in the area.

As part of the development tour, Governor Mutai also issued water pipes for the last mile distribution component of the Chemamul–Kiptome–Chepsagogo Water Project aimed at improving access to clean and reliable water for residents.

Kabianga Ward MCA Hon. Dominic Mutai led a team of MCAs and local leaders who accompanied the Governor during the development tour.

The Kipsigis community can today breathe a sigh of relief after it was confirmed that the Ksh 1 billion payout and the 15 percent shareholding due to the community in the sale of the multinational tea estates to Browns International Plc remains intact.

Today, when Kericho Governor H.E Dr. Erick Mutai hosted senior officials from Browns International Plc led by Dr. Oleg Pilebsky, Head of Operations, for a consultative meeting, discussions centred on pending issues surrounding the purchase of the Kericho and Bomet multinational tea estates.

Key among the matters discussed was the implementation of the 15 percent community ownership clause and the modalities for the disbursement of Ksh 1 billion to the two counties.

During the meeting, the county leadership and Browns International Plc explored several options aimed at expediting the completion of the transaction while safeguarding the interests of the local community.
The parties further agreed to establish a joint public participation-led framework that will guide the finalization of the remaining processes in the coming days.

The meeting also discussed the expansion of employment opportunities for local residents in the face of increasing mechanization within the tea sector, noting that the tea estates remain the economic backbone of Kericho and its surrounding areas.

Governor Mutai reaffirmed the County Government’s commitment to protecting community interests while ensuring that the transaction delivers long-term economic benefits to residents.

In a bid to lead the prevention and management of communicable diseases, the County Government of Kericho through the Public Health Directorate under the Department of Health Services continues to intensify community sensitization, training and capacity building initiatives across the county.

During a workshop of Male Champions Training and Sensitization Workshop held at Sunshine Hotel, Kericho, and spearheaded by the County Government in partnership with the National Syndemic Disease Control Council (NSDCC) where male champions drawn from all the six sub counties were equipped with critical knowledge and skills on the prevention and management of syndemic diseases including HIV, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), malaria, tuberculosis, leprosy and other lung diseases.

The participants were also taken through sessions on stress management and mental health improvement.
The two day training brought together 35 male champions selected from across the county with the aim of bridging the gender gap in health outcomes and strengthening community driven advocacy on health matters.

The trained champions are expected to spearhead community health talks and advocacy campaigns targeting the “Triple Threat” of new HIV infections, adolescent pregnancies and Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV).

The initiative also seeks to encourage positive health seeking behavior among men and boys, noting that many men are less likely to seek HIV testing, treatment and mental health support compared to women.

Further, the program promotes positive masculinity and gender transformative approaches aimed at reducing stigma and dismantling harmful social norms that discourage men from openly discussing health challenges.

Following the training, the 35 champions will serve as agents of change within their respective sub counties through peer to peer mentorship and structured health talks in workplaces, social spaces and community gatherings where health information is often less accessible.

The training was led by Mr Nickson Chepkwony, Principal Program Officer, NSDCC South Rift Region, together with Geoffrey Kigen, County Multisectoral Coordinator, Department of Health Services, Kericho County.
