The triple threat of HIV infections, teenage pregnancies and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) remains a serious challenge to the health and future of young people. Today’s forum provided an important platform for adolescents, parents, caregivers, health workers and community stakeholders to discuss these challenges and identify practical solutions.

I reaffirmed the County Government’s commitment to strengthening youth-friendly, confidential and non-judgmental health services, while improving access to information, care and support. I also called for open conversations that break the silence and stigma surrounding these issues.

Through the Voice of the Children Programme, we remain committed to ensuring young people are heard and actively involved in shaping solutions that affect their lives.

Strong partnerships are vital in improving child health, nutrition and early development. Today, we engaged representatives from Kidogo and Kapu Africa to explore collaboration in nutrition, feeding programmes and early childhood development across Uasin Gishu County.

We reaffirmed our commitment to working with partners to complement government efforts in addressing nutrition challenges affecting children and families.

Investing in proper nutrition and healthy development is key to ensuring every child gets a healthy start and an opportunity to grow, develop and thrive.

Digital health is transforming healthcare delivery by improving efficiency, strengthening data management, enabling informed decision-making and ensuring timely, quality services. As Uasin Gishu embraces technology, these innovations remain key to better patient care.

I hosted a Digital Health Authority delegation to formally welcome the incoming County Digital Health Officer, Dohphine Mebeya. We discussed areas of collaboration and strengthening digital health systems across our health facilities.

I assured the delegation of our commitment to advancing digital health initiatives, enhancing coordination and ensuring technology delivers meaningful improvements in healthcare for the people of Uasin Gishu.

Reducing maternal and newborn deaths requires investment in specialised and accessible healthcare. On Thursday, alongside County Secretary Philip Meli and other senior county officials, I joined Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale, Governors and other stakeholders to translate H.E. President William Ruto’s directive into concrete action.

Uasin Gishu is among 10 selected counties to host a comprehensive maternal and newborn health facility, strengthening specialised care and improving outcomes for mothers and newborns.

The proposed 250-bed facility will expand access to quality maternal and neonatal services, contributing to the national effort to save lives.

*NATIONAL PUSH TO CUT MATERNAL AND NEWBORN DEATHS*

The Ministry of Health has moved to establish 10 comprehensive maternal and newborn health facilities , Uasin Gishu being among the ten selected counties.

Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale hosted Governors and county representatives, led by Council of Governors Health Committee Chairperson and Mombasa Governor H.E. Abdullswamad Nassir, to translate President Ruto's directive on maternal and newborn health into concrete action.

Uasin Gishu County was represented by County Secretary Mr. Philip Melly, CECM Health Ms. Janet Kurgat, Chief Officers Dr. Ambrose Tarus (Clinical Services) and Dr. Billy Lubanga (Preventive and Promotive Health Services), Directors Dr. Evans Kiprotich (Medical Services) and Mr. Laban Kiprop (Preventive and Promotive Health Services), and Huruma Sub-County Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Richard Cheserek.

The 250-bed specialised facilities will be built in Nairobi, Bomet, Kwale, Mombasa, Garissa, Kisumu, Embu, Nakuru, West Pokot and Uasin Gishu.Funded by a KES 4.4 billion grant from Amsons Group under the Mama na Mtoto Kwanza initiative, complementing the Every Woman Every Newborn Everywhere (EWENE) programme.

Each facility will offer antenatal/postnatal care, labour and recovery, obstetric care, C-sections, maternal and neonatal ICU, theatres, NICU and post-Caesarean wards.Selection follows mapping of 26 counties accounting for roughly 60% of Kenya's maternal deaths, aligned with WHO benchmarks.

Workforce support: 900 health workers trained in obstetric care, 900 in newborn care, plus recruitment of 5,000 nurses/midwives nationally.

An additional KES 4 billion is being routed through SHA to support deliveries at Level 2 and 3 facilities.

Groundbreaking is expected by September, with discussions focused on tightening national-county coordination for fast implementation.

Uasin Gishu county stands to receive a new comprehensive maternal and newborn health facility as part of this national investment, which will strengthen local capacity for complicated deliveries, neonatal and maternal intensive care, and support the county's broader UHC agenda.

Leah Tapkeron Misoi was a woman of faith and service. I joined her family, friends and community members in Simat to bid her farewell and honour her life.

Leah was special to our family; she was baptised by my dad, making today’s farewell particularly meaningful to me. May God comfort her family and loved ones, and grant her eternal rest.
