BUNGOMA FARMERS OBSERVE WORLD FOOD DAY

MABANGA. Saturday, 16th October, 2021

Deputy Governor Prof. Charles Ngome has today led the country in celebrating World Food Day at Mabanga Agricultural Training Center.

The fete, attended by farmers from across the 45 wards in the county, is celebrated on 16th of October every year to create awareness on the need to ensure food security worldwide.

Speaking to the farmers, Prof. Ngome urged them to use the day to learn better farming practices to improve on their trade even as they contribute towards eradication of hunger. 98% of farms worldwide are family owned and mainly cultivate indigenous crops that yield little.

This year's theme " Better production , Better nutrition,a better environment and a better life" resonates well with the county's agenda for farmers to ensure sustainable practices by offering subsidies to farmers and technical support to enable them practice on a fairly leveled ground.
At the moment, Governor Wangamati is visiting farmers with the 'Ukulima Mashinani' Initiative that seeks to offer farmers a chance to learn from each other and assess their progress.

In attendance were the CEC for Agriculture Hon . Mathews Makanda, Chief Officer John Wasike and all the directors in the department of Agriculture.

BUNGOMA'S PUSH TO IMPROVE HEALTHCARE GETS SHOT IN THE ARM FROM UNFPA

Bungoma County on Wednesday received a shot in the arm for its ongoing obstetric fistula medical camp. UNFPA Country Representative Dr Ademola Olajide committed fistula repair kits to the medical camp, now in its third day, until the last patient undergoes corrective surgery.

Organised by the Office of the First Lady with support from MPesa Foundation, Amref and Flying Doctors Society of Africa, the camp will see up to 60 mothers undergoing corrective surgery by a team of specialised doctors.

Already, 26 mothers have successfully undergone surgery at the Webuye Sub County Referral Hospital.

The 4th such exercise since 2018, the medical camp seeks to help hundreds of mothers in the County - some of who have lived with obstetric fistula for decades - to recover their dignity. According to Governor Wycliffe Wangamati, the condition while largely treatable, is hugely stigmatising and is responsible for impoverishing families and breaking homes.

Making a case for Bungoma, the First Lady H.E. Caroline Wangamati said the County leadership had done so much including streamlining the running of healthcare facilities and improving healthcare infrastructure but can do with a boost from the partners.

In what signals even greater collaboration in healthcare between the County and partners, Dr Ademola said they will be placing Bungoma top on the list of 12 focus counties in which the UN body will be working for the next 5 years to improve the state of healthcare and addressing the worrying statistics of maternal health and specifically teen pregnancies.

The move followed discussions in which Governor Wangamati highlighted what he has done so far to improve healthcare in the county, the real burden of disease and areas in which partners could step in and help. Specifically, he requested UNFPA and MPesa Foundation to help equip the 300-bed capacity mother and child hospital due for completion in a month - a challenge the two entities accepted to undertake.

Head of MPesa Foundation Ms Karen Basiye said as an institution and in collaboration with others, they will be investing in equipping the facility towards ensuring that no mother suffers the indignity of fistula or any other gynecological complications because they are bringing forth a life.

Other high ranking officials that were part of the discussions are Advisor on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights at UNFPA Dr Dan Okoro, Chief Executive Officer of Flying Doctors Society of Africa and Representatives from Amref.
