Niigata is one of the liveliest port cities on the Japan Sea coast, and nestled in the heart of the city is downtown Shimomachi with a 300-meter long shopping street brimming with a variety of stores, fresh local produce, and friendly local faces. Many of these fine faces are lined and worldly- wise, as Shimomachi is a town with an ageing population. We have been working to find ways to ma
ke the town sustainable, where the young and elderly live together happily and prosper. We hope to make it a model community for other cities and towns around the world with ageing populations. Our lives are changing rapidly with so many advancements in communications and technology. These days we can instantly share our personal moments on social media with our friends, acquaintances, and even total strangers. But are we as close with our friends as we were 20 years ago? Do we really exchange our true feelings in this convenient digital world? Does an instant message truly measure up to a real-life handshake? Asking ourselves these questions in Shimomachi has inspired the creation of a rather unconventional sort of map. It doesn't really look like a map, but it acts like one. Twenty four images of real moments, places, and people will provide you with a snapshot trail to follow, guiding you in your own face-to-face experience and discovery of this quaint little community. This map is not a traditional map but a pictorial one, providing you with a set of moments which are all miniature keys to real places and real people in Shimomachi. While social media and smart phones allow us to surf speedily through information on a place we want to learn about, postcards represent the opposite – slow tourism. This old-fashioned medium will arouse a nostalgia in you with handwritten messages compelling you to take your time, and stop to smell the roses. We invite you to explore Shimomachi on your own and meet the wonderful people here. Using this postcard paper trail, you can find out where the photos were taken by looking at the QR codes or GPS coordinates on the back. We would like you to share your experience with us too. Meanwhile, please send our postcards directly from the post office in Shimomachi to your friends, family, or loved ones, wherever they may be. 新潟市は、開国5港のひとつに選ばれた日本屈指の港町。昔ながらの魅力を伝えるダウンタウンが下町（しもまち）エリアです。全長約300mのフレッシュ本町商店街では、今日も静かな時が流れ、人々の笑顔が行き交っています。この新潟下町は、市内でもっとも居住者の高齢化が進んでしまった地域のひとつ。町の活気を次世代に受け継ぎ、世界の高齢化地域のモデルとなる道が模索されてきました。ソーシャルメディアで、世界中の人たちとつながることができる時代です。でも私たちは、20年前よりもたくさんの時間や友だちを手に入れたでしょうか。本当の気持ちを、デジタル空間で共有できているでしょうか。瞬時に送信できるメッセージが、何かを置き去りにしてはいないでしょうか。そんな問いかけから、ひとつの地図のアイデアが生まれました。24種類の絵葉書の姿をした、あまり見かけないユニークな地図です。町の素顔を捉えたいくつもの瞬間が、あなたを町へと連れ出します。自分だけの地図を描き、ここ新潟下町で新しい旅を始めてください。
