From seed innovation to food security: Exploring new pathways for agricultural cooperation between Namibia and Japan.
On Monday, 15 June 2026, H.E Mrs. Rosina //Hoabes, Ambassador- Designate and officials from the Embassy of Namibia in Japan held a follow - up productive meeting with the management of Sakata Seed Corporation in Yokohama to explore opportunities for collaboration in agricultural innovation, food security, and climate-resilient farming.
Discussions focused on enhancing Namibia's horticulture sector through improved seed technologies, capacity building, and research partnerships. Particular attention was given to the potential collaboration with existing research stations in Namibia to develop drought-resistant vegetable varieties suited to the country's arid conditions. The meeting also explored prospects for cooperation in germplasm collection and research involving indigenous plant species such as the Nara melon, renowned for its exceptional drought tolerance.
Sakata Seed, a global leader in vegetable and flower seed breeding with operations in more than 170 countries, expressed interest in working with Namibian institutions, including the University of Namibia (UNAM), to advance agricultural research and innovation.
The engagement reflects Namibia's commitment to achieving food security, promoting climate-smart agriculture, and fostering mutually beneficial partnerships with Japanese stakeholders.
