先週日曜日、茅刈りを体験しました！

茅はススキの事です。長野県史跡「正受庵」の屋根は茅で出来ています。昨冬の大雪でかやぶき屋根がくぼんだので、修復工事をするために茅刈りの手伝いをしました。

茅の刈り方は稲刈りと違い、脇でススキを抱くように刈ります。ベテランの方々は刈るのが速かったので、中盤から私は茅を集合場所まで運ぶ作業をしました。茅束はとても重かったです！

正受庵の修復工事に協力でき、有意義な時間を過ごせたと思います！

Last Sunday, I helped out in harvesting thatch!

Thatch is made out of Japanese silver grass. The roof of Shojuan Temple, a Nagano Prefecture historical site, is made of thatch. Last winter's heavy snowfall had damaged the thatched roof, so I helped to cut thatch in order to repair the roof.

Unlike harvesting rice, you need to cut the grass after wrapping one arm around the grass. Experienced volunteers were so fast in harvesting, so I ended up helping them carry the thatch to the assembly point halfway through. Those bundles of thatch were very heavy!

先週末、ふるさと館が主催の「綿と木の実のクリスマスリース」体験工房に参加しました！

まず、地元のアケビの蔓（つる）、葛（くず）、山葡萄などをねじって、終わりも始まりもない「永遠」のシンボル、リースの「輪」を作りました。

リースには「厳しい冬を乗り越える」や「豊穣」を願う意味が込められています。リース飾りの材料は近くで採れた木の実と植物です。ふるさと館の方が育てた綿、美術館の前のアジサイ、近所のベリー、栗、野ばらの実など、たくさんの材料がありました！輪に飾る時はバランスを考えながら材料をアレンジして作ります。生け花に似ていると思いました。

私は初心者なので、シンプルなデザインにしましたが、とても楽しかったです！

Last weekend, I went to a Christmas wreath-making workshop hosted by the Furusato Hall!

First, we twisted local akebi vines (chocolate vine), kudzu (Japanese arrowroot) and wild grape vines to make the ring of the wreath, which symbolizes “eternity” with its circular shape.

The wreaths can also mean wishing for a bountiful harvest and hoping to be able to overcome the harsh winter. Many materials were available for decorating the wreath, which include cotton managed by the Furusato Hall, hydrangeas found in front of the Art Museum, and chestnuts, rosehips and berries from the neighborhood!

Artistic and styling skills are required when decorating the wreath, which I thought was similar to ikebana.

I kept my design simple since I was a beginner in making wreaths, but the workshop was still a lot of fun!

１１月１５日に飯山市公民館で「Let’s make Nanaimo Bars!」の料理教室を開催しました！
来てくれた皆さん、ありがとうございます！

カナダのナナイモ市にちなんで名付けられたナナイモバーは甘さ満点なスイーツで、昔のナナイモ市は鉱物の生産が盛んで、炭鉱で働く夫が効率的にエネルギーを摂取できるようにと、主婦の間で考えられた食べ物です。主な食材はバター、砂糖とチョコレートなので、カロリーが高いです！

ぜひ、一度試してみてはいかがでしょうか？

I hosted a cooking class called “Let’s make Nanaimo Bars!” on November 15 at the Iiyama City Community Center. I would like to give a big thank you to those who came!

Named after the Canadian city of Nanaimo, Nanaimo bars are a sweet treat, and were created by housewives in the old days when Nanaimo City was a major producer of coal, so that their husbands working in the mines would have an efficient source of energy. Its main ingredients are butter, sugar and chocolate, so it's high in calories!

前回の投稿に引き続き、今回はセクション７の写真をシェアします。

セクション７は天水山（あまみずやま）から降り、千曲川方面に行くコースです。午後からこのセクションを歩き始めたので、ゴール地点に着く時はもう真っ暗でしたが、途中には七色の夕焼け、清い月影、里山の灯など、絵のような綺麗な景色が見られて、とても感動しました。

Continuing from my previous post, I will now share photos of Shin-etsu Trail Section 7.

Section 7 descends from Mt. Amamizu and goes toward the Chikuma River. We started walking this section in the afternoon, so it was dark by the time we reached our destination, but I was glad we did it this way because I was able to see the picturesque scenery along the way, including the rainbow-colored sunset, the bright and clear moon, and the lights of the Satoyama.

今回は友人と信越トレイルセクション６と７を一気に挑戦し、１０時間半を掛けて２０ｋｍ歩きました！セクション６で撮った写真をシェアしたいと思います！

セクション６は長野県と新潟県の境沿いにあり、東方向に進むと、左側に日本海が見えます！途中には水々しいナメコとブナの木が沢山ありました。セクション６の一部はとても歩きやすくて、昔使われていた古道だそうです。

信越トレイルは苗場山まで延伸する前に天水山（あまみずやま）で終わりましたので、今回で関田山脈（８０ｋｍ）を完走しました!(^^)!

This time, my friends and I hiked Shin-etsu Trail Sections 6 and 7 at once and walked 20km in 10.5 hours! I would like to share some pictures I took in Section 6 in this post.

Section 6 follows the border between Nagano and Niigata prefectures, and as you head east, you can see the Sea of Japan on your left! There were many nameko mushrooms and beech trees along the way. Part of Section 6 is very easy to walk and is said to be an old trail that was used in the past.

The Shinetsu Trail ended at Mt. Amamizu before it extended to Mt. Naeba across the Chikuma river last year, so this time we finished hiking the Sekida Mountain Range (80km)!

先週末、いいやま広小路のハロウィーンイベントで市内在住のALT、ボランティアの皆さんと一緒にゲームとパレードをしました！私はハロウィーンをテーマにした「あみだくじ」のゲームを企画しました。子供たちは飴や景品をゲットして、とても楽しそうに遊んでいました！

ハロウィーンの日（１０月３１日）に仮装して、「トリック・オア・トリート（お菓子をくれないといたずらをするよ！）」と言って、お菓子をもらう文化は日本でも有名ですね！皆さんは今年ハロウィーンを楽しんでいましたか？

Last weekend, I joined ALTs and volunteers living in the city for games and a parade at the Iiyama Hirokoji Halloween event! I organized a Halloween-themed Ghost Leg lottery game. The kids had so much fun winning candies and prizes!

On Halloween day (October 31), people dress up in costumes and say "Trick or Treat!” to receive candies! Did you enjoy Halloween this year?

二週前、きのこ観察会に参加しました！よく行くハイキングで、キノコを発見しても、どんなキノコなのかが分からない場合が多いので、この機会にキノコの事を勉強したいと思います。

茶屋池のブナの森に行き、2時間ほどキノコを探して、たくさんのキノコを見つけました！見たことのない、不思議な形のキノコもありました。キノコの中で、食べられるキノコは僅かで、食用の可能性が判別できないものがほとんどです。

カナダに住んでいた時に食べていた、クリーミーなワイルドマッシュルームスープが大好きです。今回たくさんのナラタケを収穫したので、飯山産ワイルドナラタケスープが出来そうですね！
（プロからの注意：ナラタケを食べ過ぎますと、消化に影響がありそうです。）

I joined a Mushroom Observation Hiking Tour two weeks ago! I have been to many hikes, but I could hardly recognize any of the mushrooms I saw along the trail. This was a good opportunity for me to learn more about mushrooms.

We went to the beech forest near Chayaike Pond, and spent 2 hours foraging many mushrooms! Some of the mushrooms had strange shapes that I had never seen before. Among the mushrooms found, only 2 kinds were edible, and most of them were inedible.

The creamy wild mushroom soup was one of my favorite dishes when I lived in Canada. Now that we have harvested so many Naratake mushrooms, it looks like we can make Iiyama Wild Naratake Mushroom Soup!

収穫したお米は学校の給食で提供される予定です。皆さんで頑張って収穫したお米はきっと美味しいと思います！
私も食べたかったな～

Last week I harvested rice with the students and staff from Higashi Elementary School at Fukushima Rice Terrace!

The rice we harvested will be served during school lunches. I am sure the rice we all worked so hard to harvest will be delicious! I wish I could have some too!

先週末、五束の太々神楽（ごそくのだいだいかぐら）を見学させていただきました！今年は一般公開中止でしたが、今回は市の職員として取材に行きました。

五束の太々神楽は長野県指定の無形民俗文化財です。毎年九月中旬に健御名方富命彦神別神社（たけみなかたとみのみことひこかみわけじんじゃ）（別名：五束神社）で五穀豊穣を願うために行う秋祭りで神事の一環として「舞」があり、今回は「二柱（ふたばしら）」という神楽を踊りました。

日本の神社で行われる秋祭りは収穫の前に行い、豊作を願うものが多いですが、カナダでは五穀豊穣を願うための祭りがなく、収穫後に豊作を感謝する「感恩祭」があります。文化の違いは面白いと思います！

日本にいる私は今年、豊作になることを祈っています。

Last weekend I had the pleasure of observing the Gosoku Daidai Kagura, which is a Shinto rutial ceremonial dance! This year it was closed to the public, but I went to the event as a city employee.

Gosoku Daidai Kagura is an Intangible Folk Cultural Asset designated by Nagano Prefecture. Every year in mid-September at the Takeminakatatominomikoto-hikokamiwake Shrine (also known as Gosoku Shrine), an autumn festival is held to pray for a good harvest., and the kagura is part of the ritual. This time the Kagura called "Futabashira” was performed.

In Japan, most autumn festivals at shrines are held before harvesting to wish for a bountiful harvest, but in Canada, we celebrate Thanksgiving instead to give thanks for what we have after harvest season. I think the cultural differences are interesting!

As I am in Japan this year, I will be praying for a bountiful harvest.

皆さん、今週末にお月見をしましたか？

中国のお月見は「中秋節（日本語：ちゅうしゅうせつ）」、十五夜の月を鑑賞する行事で、旧暦の8月15日に行われます。今年は９月１０日にあたります。この夜の月は普段より大きくに見えて、明るさも倍増しているようです。一緒にお月見していた友人も月の大きさに驚きました。

私にとって、お月見は秋の風物詩です。毎年、月餅（日本語：げっぺい、中国語：ユエビン）を食べながら徐々に上がる月を見ます（写真２）。月餅は様々なバリエーションがあり、私が一番好きなものは広東式のハスの実の餡と茹でた鹹蛋（シェンタン、アヒルの卵を塩水に漬けたもの）の黄身を入れた月餅です（写真３）。季節限定販売なので、次回食べられる機会は来年になります。

Did you enjoy the full moon this weekend?

Mid-Autumn Festival is an event to view the full moon on August 15 of the lunar calendar. This year it falls on September 10 and the moon on this night appears larger and brighter than usual. My friend was surprised at how big and bright the moon was.

Mid-Autumn Festival is an autumn tradition for me. Every year, I watch the moon rise gradually while eating mooncake (Photo 2). There are many variations of mooncakes, but my favorite is the Cantonese-style mooncake with lotus seed filling and the yolk of a boiled salted egg (Photo 3). Since it is only available this time of the year, I will need to wait until next year before I can eat it again.

芸術の秋をクリアしました！

先週末、友人の絵の個展に行き、美術鑑賞のうえ、オリジナルトートバッグを作るワークショップにも参加しました！

最初は印象派的なデザインか実写のものを描くかを迷いましたが、最終的に飯山の初春を描きました。出来栄えはどうでしょうか？

Autumn is a great season for doing many things, and one of them is arts.

Last week, I went to a friend’s art exhibit, and joined a painting workshop to create my very own tote bag. I couldn’t decide on the design at first, but I ended up drawing Iiyama’s early spring. How do you like my art?

先週末友人と信越トレイルセクション４に挑戦してみました！

今回のコースは関田峠～黒倉山～鍋倉山～小沢峠～仏ヶ峰登山口です。

午前中の雨によって、霧に満ちたブナの森はカナダ西部の原生林に似ていて、なんだか懐かしい景色に思えました。神秘的で、幻想的で、森の精霊が現れるような雰囲気でした（写真２）。

ハイキングの最後、戸狩エリアにいた時に雨がやんで、スキー場からいい景色が見えました。斑尾スキー場のように、戸狩スキー場でも夏景色と冬景色で違う魅力があります（写真１）！冬にまたスキーに来たいです！

I hiked the Shin-etsu Trail Section 4 with my friends last weekend!

The course this time was Sekida Pass~Mt. Kurokura~Mt. Nabekura - Kozawa Pass Hotoke ga Mine trailhead.

The fog-filled beech forests, created by the morning rain, looked somewhat like the foggy West Coast forests in Canada, which gave me nostalgia. It was mysterious, magical, and it was as if the spirits of the forest can appear anytime, anywhere (Photo 2).

At the end of the hike in the Togari area, the rain stopped and we had a nice view from the ski resort. Just like the Madarao ski resort, the summer and winter views from Togari ski resort have different charms (Photo 1)! I hope to come back in the winter to ski again!
