The $53.5 million investment in the rehabilitation of the Old Fort Craft Market represents an investment in our people, their livelihoods and the culture they proudly share with every visitor.

Our craft vendors are ambassadors of Jamaica. Through their creativity, their stories and their warm welcome, they give tourists a piece of our island to take home. Behind every sale is a family being supported, a skill being preserved and a dream being kept alive.

This project is about giving those dreams room to grow. A space where vendors can showcase their work with pride, build stronger businesses and see their contribution to Montego Bay reflected in the quality of their surroundings.

A partnership becomes meaningful not when an agreement is signed, but when ordinary people begin to experience extraordinary change.

The engagements began in late 2024. On February 18, 2025, Richard Vernon - Mayor of Montego Bay ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ฒ Richard Vernon | Mayor of Montego Bay, joined Mastercard and key partners like NCB Jamaica to formalise a shared commitment to empowering the craft traders of Montego Bay.

Today, as we reflect in September 2026, that moment represents far more than the signing of a document.

Through this partnership, traders at the Harbour Street and Old Fort Craft Markets have gained access to digital payment technology, financial education and new opportunities to participate more fully in the tourism economy. Vendors who once watched potential customers walk away because they could not accept card payments are now better equipped to secure those sales, support their families and strengthen their businesses.

For many, particularly older traders who had never used this technology before, the journey required patience, training and trust. They were not simply given machines. They were given the knowledge and confidence needed to move forward in a changing world.

Mayor Vernon believes development must reach the people who have worked quietly for decades, preserving Jamaicaโ€™s culture and sharing it with the world. Modernising Montego Bay must never mean leaving its people behind. It must mean helping them move forward with the city.

So many lives have been changed through this partnership, and many more continue to be changed. This is what progress looks like when government, the private sector and the people work together with purpose.

The work continues. The vision remains clear. Every trader deserves an opportunity to earn, grow and claim their rightful place in Montego Bayโ€™s future.

Stepping onto a stage takes courage. Using that platform to make a difference gives that courage purpose.

On Sunday, August 30, 2026, Richard Vernon - Mayor of Montego Bay ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ฒ Richard Vernon | Mayor of Montego Bay attended and served as a judge at the Miss Jamaica World Western Region (MJW WR) Grand Coronation at Daโ€™Vue in Montego Bay.

He was joined on the judging panel by Chief Judge Jermaine J Dyer, Director of Regionals for Miss Jamaica World, and Theresa Walker, Director of the Miss Montego Bay Foundation.

The evening celebrated nine young women who stepped forward not only to compete, but to grow, lead and use their voices in service through Beauty with a Purpose.

Mayor Vernon congratulates the newly crowned Miss Jamaica World Western Region, Abigail Spencer, on her achievement, as well as First Runner Up itzx_sashane and Second Runner Up Rogina Abigail๐ŸŒธ.

He also commends every contestant who committed herself to the journey and the organisers who continue to create opportunities for young women to build confidence, discover their potential and recognise the value of their voices.

Of special significance to Mayor Vernon is the leadership of two Montego Bay women, MISS INTERNATIONAL JAMAICA 2025๐Ÿ‘‘ and ๐‘ป๐‘ฏ๐‘ฌ๐‘น๐‘ฌ ๐‘ฐ๐‘บ ๐‘พ๐‘จ๐‘น ๐‘ฐ๐‘ต ๐‘ฉ๐‘จ ๐‘บ๐‘ฐ๐‘ต๐‘ฎ ๐‘บ๐‘ฌ, who are helping to guide the Western Region of the pageant and create opportunities for another generation of young women.

Their work is a reminder that when women are empowered, they can use their own experiences to open doors for those coming behind them.

A crown may recognise what happens on a stage, but true purpose is measured by the lives touched long after the applause ends.

On Saturday, August 29, 2026, Richard Vernon - Mayor of Montego Bay ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ฒ Richard Vernon | Mayor of Montego Bay, attended the Service of Inauguration for the newly elected administration of the West Jamaica Conference of Seventh day Adventists for the 2026 to 2030 quadrennium.

The service, held at the Seventh day Adventist Conference Centre in Mount Salem, Catherine Hall, marked the inauguration and consecration of Pastor Vincent G. Rose as President, Pastor Vencot N. Dyer as Executive Secretary and Mrs. Marion Barrett Popkin as Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer, along with the wider team of directors and leaders.

Mayor Vernon congratulates the newly elected administration as they accept this sacred responsibility. True leadership is not measured only by the position one holds, but by the lives one touches, the hope one restores and the service one gives.

The West Jamaica Conference of SDA continues to be a valued partner in strengthening families, guiding young people, supporting vulnerable citizens and building communities rooted in faith, compassion and purpose.

May God grant the entire leadership team wisdom, strength and grace as they serve throughout this new term.
