The St Andrew Justice Centre resumed operations on Monday, August 24, following the completion of improvement works.

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Delroy Chuck, and Permanent Secretary, Mrs Grace Ann Stewart McFarlane, recently met with Administrator-General and CEO, Mrs Stacie-Ann Carty and members of the AGD’s management team.

Discussions focused on the AGD’s ongoing efforts to dispose of estates under its care, as well as its public education campaign highlighting the importance of making a will.

The Minister also addressed AGD staff selected to participate in mediation training, being spearheaded by the Dispute Resolution Foundation.

The trained mediators will assist in resolving disagreements that may arise during visits to the AGD, helping to promote more peaceful and effective dispute resolution.

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon Delroy Chuck, held productive discussions with head of Co-operation for Jamaica and Belize, Caribbean Regional Development Programme, Shehryar Sarwar and Senior International Assistance Officer at the High Commission of Canada in Jamaica, Deborah Duperly-Pinks.

During the meeting, Minister Chuck provided an update on the Ministry’s upcoming plans to further expand access to mediation across Jamaica, while also exploring other areas of continued collaboration within the justice sector.

Canada has been a longstanding development partner of Jamaica, providing valuable support toward strengthening the country’s justice system, including assistance in the area of legal aid, among other initiatives.

The Ministry looks forward to continued partnership and collaboration in advancing access to justice for all Jamaicans.

On Wednesday, August 19, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, the Hon Delroy Chuck, and Permanent Secretary, Mrs Grace Ann Stewart McFarlane, paid a courtesy call on Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Ms Claudette Thompson, and members of her team.

The wide-ranging discussions focused on the Court backlog, staff welfare and strategies to strengthen the efficiency and effectiveness of Jamaica’s justice system.

Minister Chuck encouraged prosecutors to make greater use of plea bargaining, where appropriate, noting that it can help to resolve matters before the Courts more efficiently and contribute to reducing case backlog.

The Minister also congratulated Ms Thompson on her recent appointment as King’s Counsel and wished her continued success as she leads the Office of the DPP.

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, the Hon. Delroy Chuck, KC, MP, addressed the 8th Annual Judiciary Strategic Management Retreat this morning at AC Hotel by Marriott.

During his address, Minister Chuck reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening Jamaica’s justice infrastructure, including plans for the construction of four new courts under the NAARA Project.

He also highlighted the continued drive toward a paperless court system, while commending the Chief Justice, Hon. Bryan Sykes, and his team for their ongoing efforts to reduce case backlogs and improve the efficiency of the courts.

Minister Chuck further urged the Judiciary to place special emphasis on clearing outstanding matters involving probate, restrictive covenants and related proceedings, as part of the broader effort to ensure timely access to justice.
