Protect Your Plants During the El Niño Dry Spell!

With hot and dry conditions affecting our environment, our trees and other plants need a some extra care.

Here are some simple tips to help your plants survive and thrive:

Water wisely – Water early in the morning or late in the afternoon to reduce water loss through evaporation.

Mulch, mulch, mulch! – Apply dry leaves, grass clippings or other organic material around the base of plants to retain moisture and keep the soil cool.

Provide shade – Protect young and newly planted seedlings from excessive heat and direct sunlight where possible.

Avoid over-fertilising – Plants under heat and water stress may not absorb nutrients efficiently.

Remove competing weeds – Weeds compete with plants for precious water and nutrients.

Check your plants regularly – Look for wilting, dry soil, leaf scorching and other signs of heat or water stress.

Every drop counts. Every tree matters. 🌳💧
Let’s do our part to protect Jamaica’s forests including those in urban spaces during the dry season.
