Emancipation Day Message from JALGO
Today, as we commemorate Emancipation Day, the Jamaica Association of Local Government Officers (JALGO) honours the courage, resilience, and determination of our ancestors whose struggle for freedom laid the foundation for the Jamaica and Caribbean we know today.
Emancipation was not only the end of forced and unpaid labour, it marked the beginning of a journey built on the strength, skill, and unwavering commitment of workers.
From the plantations to the factories, classrooms, hospitals, public service, farms, and businesses, generations of Jamaican and Caribbean workers have shaped our societies through their labour, innovation, and sacrifice.
Their contributions have driven economic growth, strengthened our institutions, preserved our culture, and inspired future generations to strive for excellence and equality. Every milestone achieved as a nation and as a region stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of our workers.
As we reflect on the significance of this day, JALGO reaffirms its commitment to advocating for the tenets of decent work: fair wages, safe working conditions, dignity, equity, and opportunities for all workers.
The freedoms won through emancipation must continue to be reflected in workplaces where every individual is respected, valued, and empowered to contribute to national development.
On this Emancipation Day, let us honour the legacy of those who came before us by continuing to build a Jamaica and Caribbean where justice, inclusion, and decent work remain at the heart of our progress.
Happy Emancipation Day from JALGO.
