THE OPEN GOVERNMENT PARTNERSHIP and TRANSPARENT AND ACCOUNTABLE PROCUREMENT SYSTEM FOR LOCAL AUTHORITIES

The Open Government Partnership is a multilateral initiative that aims to secure concrete commitments from governments to promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption, and harness new technologies to strengthen governance. In the spirit of multi-stakeholder collaboration, OGP is overseen by a Steering Committee including representatives of governments and civil society organizations.

The Open Government Partnership formally launched on September 20, 2011 and since then, OGP has welcomed the commitment of 62 additional governments to join the Partnership. In total, 70 OGP participating countries have made over 2,500 commitments to make their governments more open and accountable.

Under the pledge to strengthen local system as per the criteria of OGP, Federation of Sri Lankan Local Government Authorities with the collaboration of Ministry of Local Government have initiated a project to make the ‘procurement system’ of local government more transparent and accountable.

Initial discussions of this program was conducted at the Ministry of Local Government on 8th November 2016 with the participation of stakeholders from both public and private sector who shared their views and expertise.
