Nupur Sheoran assured India of its first medal at the World Boxing Championships by reaching the semifinals of the women’s +80kg category. She defeated Oltinoy Sotimboeva of Uzbekistan 4-1 in a scrappy contest. Nupur, the 26-year-old granddaughter of legendary boxer Hawa Singh, entered the competition directly in the quarterfinals and secured at least a bronze medal. The +80kg category, which is a non-Olympic weight class, features just 10 boxers in the ongoing competition.
Nupur started strong, landing sharp combinations early. The Uzbek boxer responded with a straight jab, but frequent clinching disrupted the rounds. Nupur took the opening round on four of the five judges’ cards. In the second round, Sotimboeva, aged 20, kept the exchanges messy and managed to sway two judges despite Nupur having a strong finish. In the final round, Sotimboeva lost a point for excessive holding, while Nupur was penalized for using her head, canceling out the advantage.
Despite more swinging than scoring in the closing stages, Nupur’s cleaner punches secured her place in the semifinals. The World Boxing Championships are ongoing in Liverpool. Alongside Nupur, other Indian boxers Jadumani Singh, Abhinash Jamwal, Nikhat Zareen, Jaismine Lamboria, Pooja Rani, and Jamwal are also competing at different stages
