Tiruvannamalai town is the administrative headquarters of the Tiruvannamalai district. The town has great religious importance from ancient times. In 2007, during his tenure as Deputy Chief Minister MK Stalin gave away 10,171 free house pattas to the needy residents across the district of Tiruvannamalai. MK Stalin inaugurated 166 developmental works worth Rs. 6.84 crores in Tiruvannamalai district and announced 177 schemes at a cost for Rs. 36.6 crores. He also confirmed the DMK government’s project to setup milk powder processing unit at Ammapalayam to provide employment opportunities to the people in the area. A total of 600 houses were constructed in 6 villages of the Tiruvannamalai district during the DMK rule under the Periyar memorial Samathuvapuram housing project. These villages include Mekkalur, Thatchur, Ammapalayam, Gengapuram, Puliyarampakkam, and Kasthampadi.
