GORSAM CHORTEN (GORZAM STUPA)
The Gorsam Chorten (Stupa) is one of the largest Stupa of North East India which is located at Zemithang, a circle headquarter of Tawang district at a distance of 92 kms north west from Tawang Township. The sky looming high stupa was constructed by Lama Pradar from Kharman Village in Zemithang, probably, in the 13th century A.D (Exact date unknown). The 93 feet height stupa is situated near the Nyamjang Chu and is modeled after the Boudhinath Stupa of Nepal. It is made by locally available schistose stone slabs along with mud plaster.

Architecture & Design:
The exterior architecture of the chorten (stupa) comprises of a semi-circular dome on the top resting on a three terraced plinth. The large cylindrical dome is 16 mtrs in diameter and 49.5 mtrs in circumference. A flight of steps touches the uppermost terrace of the stupa. The hemispherical dome is surmounted by a square harmika (the chamber on the upper portion of a stupa) with 13 steps roof in pyramidal order and crowned by ornamented chamber which is covered with glass panes. The square harmika of the stupa has enormous eyes of the ‘all seeing Buddha’ at the capital that overlooks the four sides of the stupa.
The base of the stupa is square in shape having each side of 170 feet in length. Four miniature stupas are erected on the four corners of the lowest terrace of the plinth. A circumambulatory path is paved at the square basement which is ornamented by holy prayer wheels (Mane). There are four entrance gates through which one can enter the complex.
A monastery (Gonpa) is co-located with this vintage Stupa.

Historical Background:
As per local legends, there is a fascinating story regarding the origin of this chorten.
The Gorsam Chorten was constructed by Lama Pradar from Kharman Village in Zemithang.
It is said that one day his mother went to the fields leaving the baby at home. When she returned, she did not find him at his usual cot. An anxious search led to the discovery of the baby on the lap of a monkey atop a ‘Darchog’ (flagstaff). All were nervous that the monkey might drop the baby on the ground. But to the relief of all, the monkey climbed down with the baby and returned it to its cot, safe and unharmed. Seeing this miracle, the local people named the boy Pradar (Pra- the local word for monkey & dar- Darchog or flagstaff). Later he went to Tsona Monastery for his religious education and came to be known as Lama Pradar.
Lama Pradar conceived the idea of a grand chorten for the dissemination of ‘dharma’ in the Pangchen Area. The people of the villages enthusiastically supported him in the idea and the then Dalai Lama blessed him in his mission and gave him sacred articles (images of Gods, religious texts, etc.) to be kept inside the chorten. Local legend has it that Lama Pradar travelled to Kathmandu and carved a miniature model of the shrine using radish. After returning to Gorsam, Lama Pradar got the chorten built with the help of the people of the surrounding villages. It is said to have taken around 15 years to build the chorten.

Gorsam Kora Festival:
An annual 03 days festival called Gorsam Kora (circumambulation of the stupa) is held at the stupa at the end of the first month of the Lunar Calender (exactly after one month of the Monpa New Year ‘Losar’). This festival, of circumambulation and Offering prayers at the Stupa, is attended by people from all over the district and also from the neighboring country of Bhutan. The Cheerful Monpas, in their colourful traditional attire, celebrate this spectacular festival with full enthusiasm and hospitality.
The Door to the chambers of the Stupa is opened every 12 years wherein the sacred images, religious texts, etc. are revisited by lamas and pilgrims. This particular event of the Gorsam Kora Festival is celebrated with greater fanfare.

SEEMA DARSHAN FOR STUDENTS OF ZEMITHANG AREA ORGANIZED UNDER VIBRANT VILLAGE PROGRAMME

On 20th January, more than 50 Teachers and Students of Govt Upper Primary School Lumpo, Govt. Residential School Taksang, Govt. Res. School Zemithang and Govt. Res. School Socktsen, led by DDSE Tawang Hridar Phuntso, were taken for Seema Darshan at Khinzemane border, near the LAC, under Zemithang Circle. The border visit was organized by the Tawang District Administration as a part of the Vibrant Village Programme and was supported, with utmost enthusiasm, by ITBP and the Indian Army.

Interestingly, it was a first of its kind visit organized for the students who were very curious and excited with the program. The students were taken to Khinzemane, near the LAC, where they paid homage to the Martyrs of 1962 war and the Holy Tree. The visit was also aimed to give the students firsthand experience of border areas & exposure of the harsh terrain and weather conditions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) along China in Tawang.

The Indo Tibetan Border Police and the Indian Army organized the program in a befitting manner and provided refreshments and lunch to the students and visitors. A weapons display was also put up by the ITBP and 24 Sikh wherein the students were explained in detail about the various arms/ammunitions used by the forces. The excitement and ebullience was very visible on the face of the young students who were completely overwhelmed to see the forces operating at such an altitude in close coordination with Civic administration.

DDSE Tawang Hridar Phuntso informing about the Govt. of India's Vibrant Village Programme mentioned that the key focus area of the programme is on livelihood generation, tourism promotion activities, road connectivity, housing, rural infrastructure, renewable energy, internet connections, etc. and called upon all the stakeholders to support and contribute in the development of Zemithang into a vibrant village. He advocated for more such activities for further strengthening the already strong Civil Army relationship in the area.
ITBP and Army officers also spoke on the occasion wherein they motivated the young students to join the Indian Armed Forces as Officers.
