State-level seminar on Scientific Beekeeping and Oilseed integration begins at NEHU Tura campus
Tura, June 3, 2026: A two-day State-Level Seminar on “Scientific Honey Beekeeping Integrated with Oilseed Mission” commenced on Wednesday at the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Tura Campus, bringing together farmers, beekeepers, entrepreneurs, academicians, students, and development practitioners to explore the growing potential of beekeeping as a sustainable livelihood and agricultural support system.
The seminar, being held from June 3 to 4, is jointly organized by the National Institute for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (ni-msme), Hyderabad, under the Ministry of MSME, Government of India, and the Department of Agribusiness Management and Food Technology, NEHU Tura Campus. The event is being conducted in collaboration with the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA), West Garo Hills, and is sponsored by the National Bee Board under the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM), Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India.
Around 250 participants from across Meghalaya are expected to attend the seminar. The initiative seeks to promote the integration of beekeeping with oilseed cultivation by encouraging farmers to place bee colonies in agricultural fields to facilitate cross-pollination. Experts noted that such integration can significantly enhance crop yields while also creating additional income opportunities through the production of honey, beeswax, propolis, and bee pollen.
The inaugural programme began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, followed by a welcome address delivered by Prof. Deepak Bhagat, Head of the Department of Agribusiness Management and Food Technology, NEHU Tura Campus. Dr. Gino A. Sangma, Assistant Professor and Organizing Secretary of the seminar, highlighted the objectives of the programme and emphasized the importance of scientific beekeeping in strengthening rural livelihoods and agricultural productivity.
The inaugural session was attended by several distinguished guests, including Shri Vibhor Aggarwal, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, Prof. F.K. Marak, Pro-Vice Chancellor of NEHU Tura Campus, and Shri Saurabh Suman, IAS, Assistant Commissioner of West Garo Hills, who addressed the gathering and underscored the significance of sustainable agricultural practices and entrepreneurship in the region.
A special segment of the programme featured entrepreneur and Prime Incubatee (Cohort-5) Smt. Randhita Sangma, who shared her experiences and success story in the field. She was felicitated during the event in recognition of her contributions. The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Sheena Haorongbam, Seminar Coordinator and Assistant Professor.
The seminar includes a series of technical sessions focusing on the scientific, economic, and entrepreneurial aspects of apiculture. The first day's proceedings featured discussions on integrating beekeeping with oilseed crops and enhancing community participation through institutional support and extension services. These sessions were chaired by Dr. Joyoshree Mahanta, CTO (Plant Pathology), ICAR-KVK Sangsanggre, and Prof. D.C. Kalita of the Department of Rural Development and Agricultural Production (RDAP), NEHU Tura Campus, respectively.
Participants also engaged with successful farmers and experts through interactive sessions that explored innovative beekeeping practices, including the management of wild honeybees (Apis dorsata) and stingless bee species. An exhibition showcasing beekeeping-related products, technologies, and initiatives was organized alongside the seminar.
The second day will focus on topics such as scientific honey processing, quality control, value addition, agribusiness opportunities, and marketing innovations. These sessions will be chaired by Prof. C.P. Suresh of the Department of Horticulture and Prof. J.U. Ahmed of the Department of Management, NEHU Tura Campus.
The seminar will conclude on June 4 with a valedictory session, during which key recommendations and outcomes will be presented, certificates distributed to participants, and the final vote of thanks delivered.
