The modern subdivision of Samastipur (originally Shamsuddinpur) was founded by Hazi Shamsuddin Ilyas of West Bengal. Samastipur became a district in 1976 when it was split from Darbhanga district. Samastipur is one of the thirty-eight districts of Bihar in India. The district occupies an area of 2904 km² and has a population of 32,16,929.
