On the first day of Navratri, we attended the inauguration of STAGE ‘s new office in NOIDA. It is our first corporate interior project to be completed!

On the last day of Navratri, we attended the inauguration of Tandoori Taal, a Punjabi restaurant in Bengaluru’s Indiranagar 12th Main Road. It is our first hospitality space to be completed!

Our first BUILT project is HERE!

Deccan Gymkhana is one of Pune’s most respected clubs with more than a century of history in sport.

The joint competition entry by Studio Mariici and BBLOX Design went beyond upgrading equipment and finishes. The challenge was to create a modern, functional space while respecting the character and heritage of the institution.

Here’s what changed:

Floors & Flow: Beige vinyl flooring gave way to a blue-grey runway that guides members through distinct zones.

Lighting & Ambience: Orange beams and flat lights became futuristic LED profiles and an open ceiling adding dynamism and lifting energy instantly.

Cardio Zone: Once just a row of treadmills, now a dedicated cardio + spin hub, powered by motivational walls.

Weights Zone: From cluttered racks to sleek benches and open space — complete with the mantra “Lift Heavy, Live Light.”

Community Experience: Even the reception is redesigned as a vantage to observe the flow into the workout floor, creating an inspiring first impression.

Uday, Arjun and I are truly excited to announce that our social impact project, A School For the People By the People at Selenghat, Assam has been selected as one of the 6 finalists at Architecture-in-Development's Global Challenge. We will be partnering closely with Architecture-in-Development linking our grassroots efforts to a resource and advisory platform with experts, organizations and other projects from around the world! This is a huge moment for us and our friends at Karunar Kheti Trust.

"The A--D Global Challenge is not your usual competition. [...] It celebrates the ongoing efforts of self-built, community-led initiatives world-wide and offers them the stage they deserve" (Archdaily) and for showing "strong evidence of community engagement, team capacity, architectural added value, urgency, impact and feasibility at different scales, development phases and geographical locations". up to 202 different projects were entered into this global competition. Post 8/8: What’s next for Beli Ghar and Selenghat Valley School?

Beli Ghar has been a vital pillar for setting a foundational precedent for the rural community of Selenghat to build a school in community-participatory processes and using, as far as possible, locally sustainable resources, wisdom, and skills.

It is simultaneously powerful and humbling to observe such a precedent naturally leading us towards an organic growth spurt. Time is ripe and our community is ready to add urgently needed infrastructure to our school -- we need to build 3 new classrooms so that all of our 90 children (and growing) can move out of temporary spaces and into classrooms like Beli Ghar, and we can continue on our journey to build a school that offers contextual and wholesome education till the 12th standard.

Post 7/8: Many Faces of Beli Ghar

Beli Ghar is our first experience in community architecture. It serves as our classroom and a general meeting space for parents and teachers of Selenghat Valley School. Additionally, it is a versatile space where vital grassroots systems and processes are taking form towards realizing inclusive peace and prosperity for the rural community. For example:

Beli Ghar has been vital as a formative and meeting space for community representative governing and leadership bodies like the Board of Trustees and the School Management Committee.

It’s where we arrange meetings of visitors with our community. The visitors include diverse groups ranging from the state’s education department to scientists of the local Krishi Vigyan Kendra for training sessions with farmers.

In addition to students of Selenghat Valley School, other students from nearby schools attend tutoring and mentoring sessions here.

Last but not the least, Beli Ghar vitally serves as our symbolic identity that encapsulates the little steps of an empowering movement of people -- this last point cannot be overstated.

Post 6/8: Art and Architecture of Beli Ghar

The Beli Ghar has a square planform measuring 20 ft to each side.The base is a hybrid bamboo-RCC construction while the superstructure is almost entirely made of bamboo. Guided by the local community, the design of this hut is inspired by tradition with hints of innovation!

The facade consists of modular bamboo frames. Each frame can be opened independently. This gives the users an opportunity to control the amount of heat, light and ventilation in the space.

Based on initial user feedback, we discovered that the tin roof often heated up rapidly. Therefore, a second layer of insulating bamboo false ceiling was eventually added. Part of the funds from this campaign will go towards the layering of the tin roof with thatch.

The intricate infills of the facade frames as well as other ornamentation were locally made by the artisans and the design was largely a work of their imagination. The community feels that the artistry adds an empowering dimension to this simple yet beautiful space. The kids even coined the moniker ‘Beli Ghar’ and made an emblem to go on top of the door!

Post 5/8: Building Beli Ghar

Our mission had been to firstly engage the community in constructing the first classroom thereby securing their ownership and second to elevate the experience through artistry.

With a hybrid foundation/plinth and built of bamboo, the classroom is a flexible and welcoming space for several community activities. Based on constant dialogue with the community, Uday and I prepared drawings that were then translated to the workers through a capacity building workshop. We worked with the community to build a scaled model to serve as a guide during the construction.

The design focused on transparency and ample ingress of daylight & ventilation - a foresight that is serving well in COVID times. The openings are covered in intricate crafted bamboo lattice works. The community added their touch by a choice of bright colours and even crafted the emblem of the Sun at the door.

Beli Ghar or House of the Sun is a name fondly given by the children of the community to this beautiful space. It is a symbol of acceptance and a most wonderful moment in our journey on this project.

Post 4/8: A Space for the Community

Arjun’s quest to crystallise his vision led to the requirement of a low cost and sustainable community space. We imagined a refreshingly novel space that would be traditionally rooted; which the children would find simultaneously familiar, exciting & inspiring.

Uday and I were introduced to Arjun through common friends, Vimal Kumar and Neeladri Bora; social changemakers who had followed our other social impact projects. Our connection with Arjun was instant. As he held our ears to the ground, we began forming a picture of the community’s challenges, their needs and their aspirations.

First, we helped Arjun repurpose a run-down staff quarter. We analysed the condition of the structure and proposed renovations. It was heartwarming to see this space filled with laughter and energy after years in disrepair. School had begun.

Second, we began work on the community’s social rallying point. It was decided to engage the community in building a bamboo structure that paid homage to the local building traditions. This then was to become the face of the movement. More on this in the next post!

Post 3/8: Arjun's Vision for Grassroots Transformation

For Arjun Trivedi, who grew up in the tea-plantations of Assam, the connection between the socio-economic crisis of the industry and the disempowerment of its labour population felt clear to see. However, as an adult, as he began to understand why it is so profoundly difficult to act with the related clarity, he simultaneously felt the emergence of a growing conviction that he should at least try.

To most, his decision to return from the USA to begin this attempt after working in some of the world's leading scientific institutions felt like an abrupt change, but for him it has been a part of a continuous journey where even science has been invaluable in merging his experiences in tea-plantations into the unified flow of his conviction. (Arjun has a PhD in Nuclear Physics and has worked at the cutting edge of research in nuclear and particle physics in some its leading institutions: at CERN, Switzerland where he was part of a team that made possible the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2013 and Jefferson Lab, USA where his research is contributing to the knowledge of the subnuclear world.)

This conviction informs him to not hesitate but act with its simple clarity because only an empowered collective agency of the people will reveal the many paths to a unifying peace and prosperity that can barely be seen in the current state of crisis and conflict. In building Karunar Kheti Trust and Selenghat Valley School -- curriculum and classrooms to systems of administration and management -- the people have begun to build the foundations of such a collective intention.

In recognition of this effort, Arjun was recently awarded the Wipro Education Fellowship.
