Khet Bachao Abhiyan Launched by ICAR-CIARI and its KVKs Across Andaman & Nicobar Islands

The Khet Bachao Abhiyan was launched by the ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CIARI) and its units at Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), South Andaman, North & Middle Andaman, and Car Nicobar, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Andaman and Nicobar Administration and the Union Territory Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA), A&N Islands.
The campaign aims to strengthen farmers’ awareness and promote sustainable agricultural practices by providing practical information and technical guidance directly at the village level. The major focus areas of the campaign include the benefits of soil testing, balanced and efficient fertilizer use, opportunities available under the Pulses, Oilseeds and Cotton Missions, and information on various government schemes, subsidies, and support programmes for farmers.
As part of the campaign, a comprehensive roadmap has been prepared to organize a series of outreach programmes involving input dealers, local dealers, members and representatives of Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS), cooperative societies, current and former Sarpanches, Zila Parishad members, community representatives, farm innovators, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Custom Hiring Centres (CHCs), and progressive farmers. These stakeholder-oriented programmes are expected to facilitate wider dissemination of scientific agricultural knowledge and government initiatives among farming communities across the islands.
The inaugural programme of the campaign was organized at Namunaghar, South Andaman, where 30 farmers actively participated. The programme was attended by scientists from ICAR-CIARI and ICAR-KVK South Andaman, officials from the Department of Agriculture, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, and local farmers.
During the programme, the experts highlighted the importance of soil health management and encouraged farmers to undertake regular soil testing for scientific nutrient management. Farmers were informed about the advantages of balanced and efficient fertilizer use in improving crop productivity, reducing input costs, and maintaining long-term soil fertility. Detailed information was also provided on various government schemes and support programmes available for enhancing agricultural production and farmers’ livelihoods.
The campaign will continue across different villages of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands with the objective of reaching a large number of farmers and promoting sustainable, climate-resilient, and profitable agriculture through scientific interventions and effective extension services.

Awareness Programme on Sustainable Farming Practices under “Khet Bachao Abhiyan” at Car Nicobar

As part of the ongoing “Khet Bachao Abhiyan” campaign, a team from ICAR–Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI), Sri Vijaya Puram Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), led by Dr. Santosh Kumar, Senior Scientist-cum-Head, along with Subject Matter Specialists, conducted an awareness programme on 1st June 2026 at Car Nicobar. The programme aimed to promote sustainable agricultural practices and enhance farmers’ understanding of soil and land conservation measures.
During the interaction, the team highlighted the importance of protecting agricultural land through the adoption of minimum tillage practices. Farmers were informed that reducing excessive soil disturbance helps maintain soil structure, conserve moisture, minimize erosion, and improve long-term soil health. The scientists also emphasized the role of organic manure in maintaining and enhancing soil fertility. The use of farmyard manure, compost, and other organic inputs was recommended to improve soil organic matter, nutrient availability, and overall crop productivity.
The programme provided a platform for farmers to discuss local agricultural challenges and seek technical guidance from the experts. Practical recommendations were shared on sustainable farming methods suitable for the island ecosystem, with a focus on preserving soil resources for future generations.
A total of 25 farmers actively participated in the programme and expressed keen interest in adopting the recommended practices. The initiative contributed to raising awareness about environmentally friendly and climate-resilient agricultural techniques, thereby supporting the sustainable development of farming communities in Car Nicobar.

Success Story: From Beginner to Successful Poultry Entrepreneur

Mrs. Rajeshwari, a 38-year-old M.Sc. Botany graduate from Wandoor, South Andaman, has transformed her livelihood through scientific rural poultry farming with technical support from ICAR-CIARI, Sri Vijaya Puram.

In 2023, she approached ICAR-CIARI seeking guidance for self-employment. Starting with just five indigenous backyard poultry birds and no prior experience in poultry farming, she underwent skill development training on scientific poultry management. With continuous mentoring, hands-on training, and technical support, she gradually expanded her enterprise from a small backyard unit to a scientifically managed commercial poultry venture.

Today, she operates a semi-intensive rural poultry unit integrated with a mini-incubator having a capacity of 2,500 eggs. Her enterprise includes breeder birds, meat birds, chick production, and table egg marketing. The breeder flock produces about 3,600 eggs every month, of which around 2,500 eggs are incubated, resulting in nearly 2,000 chicks with an impressive hatchability of 80%.

Every month, the enterprise markets:
• 600 kg of live poultry meat
• 600 chicks
• 1,100 table eggs

The scientifically managed integrated poultry production system generates an estimated net profit of ₹1.91 lakh per month with a Benefit-Cost Ratio of 2.02, demonstrating the profitability and sustainability of rural poultry farming under island conditions.

Mrs. Rajeshwari's journey reflects the impact of scientific interventions, skill development, and continuous technical support in creating sustainable self-employment opportunities. Her success is inspiring rural youth and farm women across the Andaman & Nicobar Islands to adopt poultry farming as a viable agri-enterprise.

ICAR-CIARI remains committed to empowering farmers and entrepreneurs through science-based technologies and capacity building for sustainable livelihood development.
