About the Piet Strydom Lecture

Born on 6 April 1946, Piet Strydom is a creative thinker and inspiring ethical voice of our times. He left apartheid South Africa in protest and came to Europe for his studies, first in Belgium and later in the United Kingdom. He subsequently taught at the School of Sociology and Philosophy at University College Cork, Ireland, for nearly four decades.

Strydom has made seminal contributions to critical theory, cognitive sociology, and collective planetary learning through works including Discourse and Knowledge: The Making of Enlightenment Sociology (2000), Risk, Environment and Society (2002), New Horizons of Critical Theory: Collective Learning and Triple Contingency (2009), and Contemporary Critical Theory and Methodology (2011).

Through the Vishwaneedam Annual Piet Strydom Lecture, we honour this remarkable thinker, teacher, and friend of the world while engaging with his enduring concerns in social theory, collective learning, and planetary well-being.
