Munger (Hindi: मुंगेर, also spelt as Monghyr during the British Raj) town is the headquarters of Munger district, in the Indian state of Bihar. On its north, east and west is river Ganga. On Southwest lies the town of Jamalpur and on southeast lies Sultanganj town. Here one can found a large number of foreigners, staying in Bihar School of Yoga. This place is well known for gun maufacturing units

here both legal and illegal. ITC's Cigarette factory is also located here along with Rail factory. This town has many historical sites. During the reign of Nawab Mir Kasim Ali Khan the capital of Bengal had been shifted from Murshidabad to Munger away from British influence. Mir Qasim had been installed by the British East India Company but eventually rebelled against their endless demands, circa 1760-64. Whilst in Munger, Mir Qasim raised an independent army to counter the British. Mir Qasim built a fort, which remains an important tourist destination, beside the Ganges river. Monghyr was a town and district of British India, in the Bhagalpur division of Bengal. The Ganga flows north only at two places along its entire length- at Benares(Varanasi) and Munger, which makes Munger a very venerated spot. At this exact place on the Ganga, half a kilometre from Ganga-Darshan, is the ancient ghat (bathing place) known as Kashtaharani Ghat. It is mentioned in the 26th Chapter of the Adi Khand of Valmiki's 'Ramayana', that both Rama and his brother Lakshman took rest at Kashtaharani Ghat after defeating the demoness Taraka. The relaxation they had, gave rise to the name of Kashtaharani (place of removal of afflictions and of relaxation). Now a days this town is also known as yoga town as world's first and only yoga university is located here named Bihar School of Yoga. Its campus is known as Ganga Darshan. As of 2011 population of Munger district is 1,359,054. In 2011 census Munger had highest female literacy rate in Bihar at 65.53% higher than state average of 53.23% (India: 65.46%). 7.8% of population here are below 6 years of age. Total Literacy rate here is 73.30% higher than state average of 63.82% (India: 74.04%). The first railway from Howrah run through Monghyr: this East Indian Railway line opened to Monghyr in 1861. After the disastrous earthquake of 1934 the town was rebuilt to give it a modern look, but in keeping with its history.
