The Farmers’ Market | May Edition brought together farmers, producer groups, and consumers to promote locally grown produce from across Meghalaya. The market featured fresh litchis, red potatoes (Phan Saw), and other agricultural products, providing farmers with direct market access and an opportunity to connect with the public.

The initiative was organised by 1917 iTEAMS under the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of Meghalaya, with support from the Meghalaya Farmers (Empowerment) Commission.

Distribution of organic ginger rhizomes in Puriang under the Meghalaya State Organic Mission 2.0 and the State Ginger Mission was organized by the Office of the District Horticulture Officer, East Khasi Hills, in collaboration with MEGNOLIA, in the presence of Shri Timothy D. Shira, Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare. The programme brought together farmers, officials, and community representatives, with key addresses underscoring the importance of promoting organic cultivation and ensuring access to quality planting materials.

The event included the ceremonial distribution of planting materials, complemented by a cultural performance by local representatives, reflecting strong community participation. It concluded with field inspections and on-site agricultural demonstrations, reinforcing knowledge exchange and advancing efforts towards sustainable farming and improved farmer livelihoods.

The March edition of the Monthly Farmers’ Market was successfully held in Shillong, showcasing fresh, seasonal produce sourced directly from local farmers across Meghalaya.

Organised by 1917 iTEAMS under the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and supported by the Meghalaya Farmers’ (Empowerment) Commission (MFEC), the initiative reinforces the Government’s commitment to strengthening farmers’ livelihoods through a direct sale model, ensuring fair pricing and eliminating intermediaries.

The market featured focus crops such as strawberries, bananas, and sesame seeds, alongside a wide range of organic produce, while also promoting inclusivity, entrepreneurship, and community participation. The event was further enriched by live music performances under the CM-MGMP (Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project).

Such initiatives continue to build a transparent, farmer-centric ecosystem and contribute towards a self-sustaining agricultural economy in the State.

Meghalaya hosted a pivotal one-day Regional Conference on Natural Farming at MAMETI, Upper Shillong. The event was organized by the Government of India, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Regional Centre for Organic & Natural Farming (RCONF), Imphal, in collaboration with the Meghalaya Natural and Organic Farming Society for Livelihood and Innovation in Agriculture (MEGNOLIA).

Smti. Bansara Mylliemnagap, Director, Directorate of Horticulture, Meghalaya, in her keynote address, emphasized the state’s natural advantage in organic farming, stating that traditional practices support soil health, lower costs, and better market returns for farmers.

The day concluded with an interactive panel discussion, moderated by Shri C.S. Shabong, Director of Agriculture (RTTI), Meghalaya, focusing on natural farming methods, challenges, opportunities, and implementation strategies, while farmers from various districts were also honoured with the ‘Best Farmer Award’ for their exemplary efforts.
