On the occasion of World Environment Day 2026, a special program was organized at the Lucknow Junction Railway Station of the North Eastern Railway, Lucknow Division, to raise awareness regarding environmental conservation, cleanliness, and the use of eco-friendly products. The event was held in the presence of the Chief Guest, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Shri Gaurav Agarwal; Additional Divisional Railway Manager (Infra) Shri Bhuvnesh Singh; and Additional Divisional Railway Manager (Operations) Smt. Neetu.
As part of the program, an exhibition was set up at the station showcasing various machines, equipment, and cleaning materials utilized in sanitation operations, thereby providing passengers with insight into the cleanliness initiatives being undertaken by the Railways. Additionally, stalls featuring earthen pottery, kulhads (traditional clay cups), and jute-based products were set up to encourage passengers to opt for eco-friendly alternatives instead of plastic. To disseminate the message of environmental conservation to the masses, a street play (Nukkad Natak) based on the theme "If the Environment Exists, So Do We" was performed by children from the Bharat Scouts and Guides, Lucknow District Association. Through their impactful acting and dialogues, approximately 15 Scout and Guide children conveyed messages regarding saving trees, avoiding the use of plastic, and water conservation. Passengers and railway employees alike appreciated this performance.
During the event, in accordance with the directives of the Railway Board, employees who had made outstanding contributions during the "Environment and Cleanliness Fortnight"—an initiative running for the past three weeks—were honored and presented with awards by Divisional Railway Manager Shri Gaurav Agarwal. On this occasion, he lauded the innovative efforts being undertaken by the Division in the fields of cleanliness and environmental conservation. As a result of these sustained efforts, the North Eastern Railway had secured the first prize in the cleanliness competitions held last year. Through this program, the Lucknow Division reiterated its commitment to maintaining a clean, green, and passenger-friendly railway premises, and resolved to continue such efforts ceaselessly in the future. The program was led by Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer (ENHM) Shri Mahendra Singh. All branch officers and employees were present on this occasion. Continuing with these efforts, a voluntary cleanup drive (Shramdaan) was conducted within the Gonda Junction station premises to clean the park area, and a tree-plantation campaign was carried out. The contractor provided the cleaning staff with a detailed explanation regarding the functioning of the composter plant and the utility of the organic manure produced therein. Furthermore, the workers were administered a pledge to practice regular yoga and exercise for a healthy lifestyle, to keep their families healthy, and to spread environmental awareness within society.
At Khalilabad Railway Station, an awareness rally was organized under the leadership of the Health Inspector, in which passengers and contractual cleaning staff participated enthusiastically. Passengers were encouraged to conserve electricity and water, to keep the environment lush green by planting as many trees as possible, and to ensure a clean environment for future generations. Station vendors and passengers were sensitized against the use of single-use plastics and encouraged to utilize recyclable bags instead. Employees were requested to promote the use of reusable water bottles.
At Basti Railway Station, under the guidance of the Health Inspector, contractual cleaning staff (Safai Mitras) demonstrated their commitment to cleanliness and the environment by performing voluntary cleanup work (Shramdaan) in the circulating area and the green park zone. The cleaning staff conveyed messages regarding water and energy conservation to the passengers. The Health Inspector provided information regarding the process of producing manure from the composter plant and its various applications. Additionally, vendors operating water vending machines were sensitized regarding the collection of wastewater generated during the purification process and its subsequent reuse in various activities.
The Lucknow Division of the Railway Administration remains steadfast in its efforts toward environmental conservation, cleanliness, and public health, and appeals to passengers to extend their cooperation in creating a green and clean railway premises.
