⛽ CAN PETROL & DIESEL REALLY BE SOLD FOR ₹35–40 PER LITRE?

A statement by Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev has once again gone viral on social media, sparking fresh debate over fuel prices in India. In the resurfaced clip, Ramdev says that petrol and diesel could be sold for ₹35–40 per litre, but only under two specific conditions—if the government allows him to enter the fuel retail business and provides significant tax relief. The statement was originally made in 2018 during an NDTV event and is now being widely shared again.

According to Ramdev, one of the biggest reasons for high fuel prices is taxation. He argued that if petrol and diesel were brought under a lower GST slab and taxes were reduced substantially, retail prices could come down dramatically. His remarks were intended to highlight the impact of taxes on fuel prices rather than announce any actual fuel business plan.

However, economists and energy experts have pointed out that the claim is difficult to achieve in practice. Even with major tax reductions, factors such as international crude oil prices, refining costs, transportation, dealer commissions, and government revenue requirements all play a significant role in determining the final price consumers pay at fuel stations. At the time, analysts noted that reaching ₹35–40 per litre would be extremely challenging under normal market conditions.

The viral video has resurfaced amid renewed discussions over fuel prices, leading many users to believe it is a recent statement. In reality, the remarks are several years old, though they continue to fuel public debate about taxation, energy policy, and the affordability of petrol and diesel in India.

Whether one agrees with Baba Ramdev's proposal or not, the discussion has once again raised an important question: Should petrol and diesel be brought under GST to reduce the burden on consumers?

What do you think? Should fuel prices be reduced through tax reforms, or are the current taxes necessary for government revenue and infrastructure spending? Share your views respectfully in the comments.
